Ten Things About TH Compton

Taylor (TH Compton) is one of the nicest people I've met in the M/M Facebook community.  She's works tirelessly to share new releases and book information in the Queer Book Recs group and I've had the pleasure of getting to know her work as well...

I also have to apologize to her, since somehow her interview fell into the black abyss of my files and only saw the light of day when she asked me about it...  but better late than never, we get to learn Ten Things about TH Compton:

Plot or Pants? Do you pre-plot your books, use an outline, fly by the seat of your pants or some combination of things? How do you keep track of characters in a series?
I work much better as a pantser, but I always jot down notes or ideas as I think of them before I ever start writing. I do think up a character map/web prior to writing with a description of each character and some attributes they possess.

Example from Samuel in Bold Beginning

Personality                       Nervous, Shy, Often Embarrassed (blushing)
Hair Color                        Light Blond Curlyish with Gray long enough to touch his ears
Eye Color                         Blue Intense (like teal)
Other Attributes               47 years old, tall 6’6 thicker neck muscular
Outfit/Accessories            Dark Gray Henley (tight), Nice Jeans

Tell us about your first… published gay fiction/romance
My first was a short called Bold Beginning about Devon and Samuel. It’s their meet-cute and first date as they begin their story. They are very much an instalove opposites attract dynamic. Devon is a short spitfire and is worried of scaring off the more timid gentle giant Samuel. It is pretty short, but these characters appear throughout the Built for You series and I am working on a short/novella to continue their story because I’m not quite done with them yet.

and then your most recent one..
My most recent published one is Beautifully Built which is about a plus size twink named Logan trying to understand why the hot bartender would be asking him out. We meet some great characters that help build Logan up. It is low on angst and lots of fun.

(Heather's Note: Since Taylor's interview got trapped in cyberspace, she's had another amazing book release in the Built For You Series, Becoming Built.

Becoming Built is a contemporary MM Romance with a bar owner who hides from everyone including himself and a fun loving slightly kinky bouncer who wants to spice up his bosses life.

This book involves a main character with a severe case of Bell’s Palsy, suffering from social anxiety, depression, and has compulsive tendencies. His case has permanent facial paralysis and pain, though not all individuals with Bell’s Palsy experience the same. Love may not fix all, but it can fill the heart.

Do you write full time or part-time?
Part-time, but I would love to get to the point where it could be full time. I am a teacher by day so I have to use my weekends and breaks wisely.

Something people would be surprised to know about you.

I have had Bell’s Palsy twice and now have permanent facial paralysis on my right side like my character Emmett.

Where do you write? Do you have a routine?
I write on my couch with a lapdesk for my laptop and a puppy cuddled up on both sides of me. I have not as of yet found a consistent routine since life and work tends to interfere, but I am working on it.

What are your writing goals for the next year? The future?
My writing goals are to wrap up the Built for you series in 2022 and start my next series. I would also like to have at least one stand alone completed in 2022 as well (even though I am a series kinda gal).

Where do you find inspiration?
Honestly a lot of it is personal experience and interactions with people in my day to day life. I am plus size like Logan and have Bell’s Palsy like Emmett etc. I have a lot of insecurities and struggles of my own and I have found writing to be very therapeutic and want to share these stories that pop into my head. There is a side character coming up in book 3 of Built for You that is 100% my real life “grandmother” (she isn’t related to me really but is family) and she is wild and has given me lots of material to work with.

10.) What do your friends and family think of what you write; do they know?
Mom knows and while she doesn’t generally read MM romance she is very supportive. She has always been a big reader and she is just glad that I found a good way to express myself and put my literature degree to good use.

My husband is very supportive and encourages me. I love bouncing ideas off of him and he actually named the coffee shop the MCs go to in the books. He would love to see me become famous so that I can be his sugar momma. ☺ I tell him he shouldn’t quit his day job anytime soon.

I have a one friend who reads MM romance and works with me who knows and she is like my biggest cheerleader. A few other friends know and want to be characters later on.
