Ten Things About... Mia Monroe - An Author Interview

One of the first people whose entire catalog I binged when I started reading M/M Romance exclusively was Mia Monroe!  I am so excited to have the opportunity to ask her 10 things about herself and her work!  I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did:

Indie or Traditionally published? - Tell us how this works for you…
I’m Indie and likely always will be. I love being able to set my own schedule and write what I want. I have total creative and professional control.

Plot or Pants? Do you pre-plot your books, use an outline, fly by the seat of your pants or some combination of things? How do you keep track of characters in a series? Do you keep a journal of your characters’ statistics, such as hair and eye color, relatives, hometown, etc.
Definitely a combo plotter/panster. I used to be completely pansting my books, but I’ve found that if I have a rough map of where I’m going, it keeps me on track. I don’t heavily plot though and I don’t keep any journals about characters.

Tell us about your first… published M/M fiction/romance
My first published MM is called Deviate. It’s a friends to lovers, bi-awakening, opposites attract story. The two MCs marry for financial reasons, but over time, discover more.
and then your most recent one..
My most recent book came out November 19th and it’s called The Jerk Next Door. As you can probably tell, it’s an enemies to lovers story. They aren’t really enemies, just annoying neighbors, but it also has bi-awakening in it. That’s kind of my jam.

Do you write full time or part-time?
I write full time as of April 2021. I was balancing an intense job with my writing career, but then I made the decision to take a leap and go full time.

Something people would be surprised to know about you
Probably that I love history, I collect Barbies, and I speak a decent amount of Italian.

Where do you write? Do you have a routine?
I have a dedicated office in my home where I write in a big comfy chair. Sometimes I’ll sit in the living room or at my desk to switch it up, but most of the time I’m in my chair.

What are your writing goals for the next year? The future?
Next year I’m working on a series that I haven’t announced yet, but that I think readers are gonna love. If they enjoyed my Tattoos and Temptation and Dirty Forty, then they’ll love what I have coming next. As far as the future is concerned, it’s all about finding the intersection between what I love writing and what readers love reading and running with that. I do have other series ideas for the next two years that should keep me busy.

What made you decide M/M romance was the genre you wanted to write? Do you write other genres?
I read an MM book recommended to me and I was instantly hooked. It took me a little while to believe I could do it too, until my friend told me the true story of two friends which eventually led to Deviate. It was my first MM plot bunny and I ran with it. I don’t write in any other genres, but I do hope to branch into other LGBT+ tropes, like MM paranormal.

What is your favorite thing about writing M/M romance?
I love the freedom I associate it with. Through reading and being involved in this community, I’ve learned more about myself and the world around me. I’m not held back in my writing or my expression of myself. I can write beautiful love stories about men without a hint of masculine toxicity and I love that. I’ve also seen how it’s brought so much happiness to people, either through discovering things about themselves or opening their eyes to LGBT+ causes and becoming a strong ally.
