On Equal Footing (Crossroads Book 2) by Sydney Rutherford

Brandon and Mike are in love, but they are living apart long distance and when Brandon loses his job he decides he's not good enough for Mike. The story of their relationship is shown over time as he makes an unusual car trip and finds that maybe his decision isn't the right one and he deserves a chance at love.

From the blurb:

Sometimes falling apart is the only way back together.

Mike is sweet, supportive, and everything Brandon’s ever wanted in a boyfriend. But then there’s his grueling career, Brandon’s empty bank account, the impossible differences between their families. Not to mention the long-distance thing.

So when Brandon finds himself unexpectedly jobless, he decides it’s time for Mike to cut his losses and sets out across the country to break up with him. He hitches a ride with Vera, and the two forge an unlikely friendship as the story of Brandon and Mike’s relationship unspools.

Vera has her own reasons for hitting the road. What starts as a simple mission to reunite an abandoned urn with its rightful owner becomes a stark reminder of her self-imposed isolation. As highways blur into cheap motels, she and Brandon discover they’re not so different after all, and that by refusing to let go of hurts from the past, they're both holding themselves back from happiness.

Can Brandon face up to what's important in time to reconcile with a heartbroken Mike, or will he have to start over, fractured and alone?

SNik's review:

Second in series (Crossroads), but can be read as a standalone. Established relationship. Opposites attract. Hurt/comfort. Single POV for one MC and a secondary character POV.

Brandon is scraping by, doing his art part time, when he meets and falls for the successful and unbelievable sweet finance bro Mike. Their relationship is special and works for a long time, but long distance and doubts about their financial and social differences causes Brandon to decide they should part.

This story has timeline jumping as it shows the development of Brandon and Mike’s relationship, which shows how deeply they fall for each other and the hurdles they have navigated. The car trip is a journey of self discovery for Brandon and his newly met companion Vera as they travel was interesting, although my favorite parts were the scenes with Brandon and Mike. I thoroughly enjoyed Brandon and Mike’s romance, Brandon’s attempt to sacrifice his happiness was heartbreaking and brought tears to my eyes, and Mike’s absolute commitment to his loving Brandon was beautiful.
