Locked in Wonderland by H.L Day writing as H.L Night

A dark trip into an unusual underworld in this homage to Alice in Wonderland. Lysander finds himself swept into Wonderland on a rescue mission but finds he may not be able to rescue even himself from danger. With no one to trust and the drawing the interest of too many, Lysander finds himself drawn to a man that may not be the savior Lysander thinks he is.

From the blurb:

If you came here by choice, enjoy the party. If you didn’t... good luck. You’re going to need it.

Lysander Carroll hasn’t known Warren White for long, but he’s certain they’ve got a future together. Then Warren is abducted in broad daylight by men driving a van marked Wonderland.

When the police refuse to investigate and every piece of evidence mysteriously disappears, Lysander realizes there’s only one way to get Warren back.
He’ll have to go to Wonderland himself.

Wonderland plays by its own twisted rules, where sex is currency, truth is negotiable, and manipulation lurks behind every smile. Caught between suspicion and irresistible attraction, Lysander can’t decide whether the enigmatic Nico Ravenscar wants to save him, claim him, or ruin him.

As he’s drawn deeper into Wonderland’s web of secrets, corruption, and depravity, Lysander discovers the most terrifying truth of all.

Getting in was the easy part.
Getting out may be impossible.
He came to rescue Warren.
Wonderland may decide to keep him instead.

Locked in Wonderland is a dark, steamy, somewhat surreal but contemporary romance loosely inspired by Alice in Wonderland, featuring a mafia-like ruling family, a morally gray love interest, strange characters that speak in riddles, and a corrupt trial.

Author's note: If you're wondering about the darkness level, it sits on the border of Day and Night. More H.L Dusk, but as that pen name doesn't exist I've erred on the side of caution and made it H.L Night. Check inside for content warnings.

SNik's review:

Standalone. Single POV. Heed content warnings. It’s important that the reader realize that this is under the HL Night pen name and as such has a much darker tone and content warnings should be taken seriously.

Lysander is infatuated and is on a mission to rescue the man he has become close to while on vacation. However, he’s drawn into an underworld filled with criminal activities and is continually running into Nico, a man with power and his own agenda.

This story has similar nonsensical character interactions as Alice in Wonderland in this homage and elaborates the story with depravity and constant danger. Lysander is an unwilling but compliant participant in some dark scenarios and we only get his POV so we don’t really know Nico’s motivations. This was an entertaining and riveting read, and certainly had enough twists to keep the reader off balance. I enjoyed the high steam and Nico’s quiet obsession with Lysander. I appreciated the ending which did not leave on a dark note and was a satisfying HEA for Lysander and Nico.
