Lesetiger's review:
This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and it certainly won’t be the last.
His writing style is light and breezy, and it’s fun to follow the story right from the start. On one hand, there’s Clifford Du Frey, the bad boy of the cycling scene, and on the other, Gabe O’Reilly, an art student from San Francisco who’s on vacation in France when the two happen to run into each other.
As a reader, you can feel the sparks flying between them right from the start. One encounter leads to another, and they begin a passionate affair.
I loved how the author viewed Paris through the eyes of an art student—it was wonderful. I also thought he captured the atmosphere of the Tour de France perfectly. The moment when the two of them spend an uninhibited time in the sea off the coast of Nice before the media frenzy breaks out was also fantastic. Does their relationship have a chance? Read it for yourselves—you’ll be thoroughly entertained!
You just have to take Gabe to your heart, because he’s absolutely lovable, and it broke my heart to see everything that happened to him. Clifford, on the other hand, is the typical bad boy who feels comfortable in that role, but even he has to face some hardships in life as the story unfolds.
What happened later on during the Tour de France was neither planned nor predictable. Overall, the surprising twists balanced well with the unpredictable situations, keeping the story consistently gripping. I just found one character’s change of attitude a bit implausible, but that didn’t bother me much.
I listened to the audiobook and finished it in two days, even though it’s over 10 hours long. That was partly due to the captivating story and partly to Michael Dean, who once again delivered an outstanding performance. The pacing was great; he managed to convey the characters’ emotions convincingly—whether it was joy, disappointment, anger, or pure heartbreak. He also has a pleasant voice and a very engaging narrative style. I’m happy to forgive him for not pronouncing all the French words correctly. As always, it was an absolute pleasure to listen to him! I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series!
