Deeper Blood by Jonathan Lake

Having survived a terrible war both Andra and Wilhelm are scarred but try to work together as Wilhelm protects Andra while Andra attempts to heal the imperial princess. An olive branch, terrible prejudices, and two men that quietly fall in love in the face of danger.

From the blurb:

Wilhelm fights and bleeds as a knight of the Imperium, growing disillusioned after mankind’s defeat against the shadow-walkers.

Andra is one of those shadow-walkers, a prophesized enemy of mankind, one Wilhelm should want to destroy.

When Andra comes to the Imperium, Wilhelm can’t help getting close to him. He finds him to be an altruistic soul—one he has much in common with. The time they spend together feels magical, but not everyone is as smitten. His fellow knights are far less welcoming, and Wilhelm falls under suspicion as fanatical beliefs take hold of those he considers brothers.

For some the war never ended, and the only good shadow-walker is a dead one.

SNik's review:

Standalone. Paranormal fantasy. Former adversaries. Close proximity. Slow burn/fade to black.

When Knight Wilhelm is tasked with protecting the shadow-walker brought to help heal the royal princess he is committed to his duty. But Andra is not what Wil expected, and they both find common ground in attraction, feelings, kindness and acceptance.

This debut book is a good blend of storytelling and sweet romance between two men that find their differences don’t really matter when their hearts are involved. The world building is good but I would have appreciated more about shadow-walkers and the reasons for the war, yet you get enough of an understanding of how war and religion cause fear and distrust that are impossible to overcome for two well-meaning people. I enjoyed Andra and Wil’s building relationship, they were both likable and have to go through something awful before finding their hopeful HEA. A really engaging read, I look forward to more from this author.
