Shadows Never Lie (Shadow Duet Book 1) by Lark Taylor

Ryan has always been left out when it comes to his brother Max and Max's best friend Dominic's  friendship (this is Not an mmm). But something shifts and suddenly Dom is paying attention to Ryan and drawing out unexpected feelings. Can Ryan trust Dom when Max always comes first?

From the blurb:

Dominic Walker has always been a good liar.

Dominic stands where I am supposed to — at my identical twin’s side. His confidant. His right- hand. His best friend. The brother he would choose.

I’ve been cast aside, relegated to the shadows. Forced to watch as Max and Dominic get everything they want. Everything I secretly want.

But then, Dominic suddenly sees me and issues an offer I can’t refuse. A challenge, actually. One he never expects me to follow through on.

With anyone else, I wouldn’t have considered it. But I’ll be damned before I let Dominic get the better of me.

It has me sinking to my knees. Literally.

A decision that changes everything.

Dominic pulls me out of the shadows, and I never want to go back.

But it’s not the shadows I need to be afraid of.

No, it’s the path that leads somewhere far darker than I could ever have imagined. Somewhere where truth and lies become shadowed.

Shadows Never Lie is the first book in the Shadow Duet. It's a contemporary, high-angst MM romance, featuring brand new characters. The duet will end in a HEA.

SNik's review:

First in duet (Shadow Duet). Brother’s best friend. Adversarial to lovers. Hurt/comfort. Slow burn. Mostly single POV. Cliffhanger. Heed content warnings.

Ryan is a twin, but he hasn’t been close to his brother since Dominic became Max’s best friend, and they both ignore Ryan for the most part. Now, as leaving for uni is getting closer, the dynamics between Dom and Ryan change and they begin to explore a new closeness that will inevitably break them.

Told mainly from Ryan’s POV, you quickly learn about all of the hurtful feelings he experiences from his brother and Dom when they are 18 years old. The way Dom and Ryan stumble around unexpected feelings and manage their constant misunderstandings and minimal honest communication was relatable for their age and yet angsty to read for sure. There were certain aspects of the way Dom and Ryan’s physical relationship starts that I am not a fan of, but it was soon overshadowed by the emotional connection that they slowly build. A well written, gripping story, I can’t wait for the second part of the duet to see how these two manage to rebuild a possible special connection.
