Phoenix and His Dragon (Colorado Dragons Book 1) by Victoria Sue

Phoenix and His Dragon kicks off the Colorado Dragons hockey pararnomal universe from Victoria Sue. This is a fated mates dragon shifter romance with a hard earned HEA. Victoria Sue is so talented when it comes to writing in general, but even more so when it comes to writing paranormal romance. She took a topic, shifters, and made it her own and completely unique.

From the blurb:

Phoenix is out of options.
Homeless, freezing, and desperate, he crashes the Colorado Dragons’ private party with one goal—seduce a player, snag a scandal, and score enough blackmail cash to survive. But when his mark turns out to be Cole Armstrong, the British star center with haunted eyes and an untouchable presence, Phoenix hesitates. Too beautiful. Too kind. Too dangerous to con.

Because Cole isn’t just a hockey legend—he’s a dragon shifter whose fire was magically bound by the same cruel father Phoenix hoped to exploit.

Cole sees through the lie. He should throw Phoenix out. Instead, something in the broken stranger calls to the fire buried deep in his chest—heat that stirs the moment they touch, a bond he can’t afford to want.

But Cole’s father is watching. And he’ll do anything to keep his son under control.

Now Phoenix is more than a risk.
He’s a weakness.
A weapon.
And maybe…the only chance Cole will ever have to break free.

For fans of MM hockey romance who want danger, heat, and dragons that burn the ice.

Angel's review:

I haven't read a book by Victoria Sue in quite some time and I'm so happy I decided to read this story. At first I had a difficult time getting into this story, there was a lot of sports talk that went over my head. However, upon reading further I really ended up enjoying Phoenix and Cole's story. .

They had an unusual meeting followed by an unprecedented situationship that evolved into something that neither man saw coming. The aspect of paranormal elements was very well written which I already knew it was going to be because I've read some of Victoria's other PNR books. It wasn't overly in your face paranormal, it was very subtle, and understated, almost like a paranormal undertone rather than that being the whole plot. Which I found refreshing because it was unique, paranormal books aren't often subtle, and while I enjoy PNR of all sorts, I also enjoyed this quieter version too.

Phoenix and Cole are so sweet together when they can get out of their heads and actually communicate with one another. They are from different worlds but end up having more in common then they initially assumed. They are each other's person, the one who settles them and makes them feel at home. I love that they built such a deep and personal relationship overtime.

I didn't love all the secrets and miscommunication but I get why those elements were there, they were apart of the plot which is understandable. I LOVED the found family Cole found himself surrounded by, he thought he didn't matter to anyone, that he was a lone wolf, but that's not true and that's a lesson he learns overtime. ((I adored that!))

Overall, a great PNR hockey romance story featuring found family, miscommunication, a dragon/human pairing, awful dad's and so much more.

Molly Otto's review:

The tension of Phoenix and his Dragon is palpable and holds you at end from start to when all comes out. Phoenix makes these choices for the better of those he loves, even if it means holding back from his mate Cole. Most times when a story has secrets at play to this caliber i want to not love a character and yet with Phoenix you understand why and root for him in the end. Cole has his own issues and thankfully with the support of Phoenix and his other close people he is able to conquer and move past this. You feel both men holding back for their fears and understand both sides without judgement. Phoenix has always done what must be done to survive, not strive but survive. Cole under the rule of his father holds all at an arm's length but learns it's okay to forgive and allow those he considers his true family in. This couple does not have what you call an easy HEA but man is it magical and perfect for them when all the pieces start to lay as they were always meant to. To top that all off you have great hockey that feels right in this fantasy world of mates and shifters. All parts feel real and not in a made-up world. I cannot wait to see where Victoria takes us next in this universe.

SNik's review:

First in series (Colorado Dragons). Paranormal. Hurt/comfort. Found family. Dual POV.

Phoenix is desperately in need of money and he targets the rising hockey star of the Colorado Dragons. But Cole sees through the con and when he helps Phoenix they give in to their mutual attraction even as outside forces are conspiring to control Cole and his career.

This book is a mix of contemporary hockey story with a sprinkle of paranormal, in that Cole is a dragon shifter but it does not directly affect his hockey playing abilities. I enjoyed the chemistry between Cole and Phoenix, the protectiveness Cole feels, but also his willingness to respect Phoenix’s independence. I’m not really a fan of secrets between main characters, and as it’s a main focus of the story it was hard for me to accept the honesty of their growing relationship. Overall though, I felt like this was an entertaining story, and if there is more world building as the series continues an interesting group of characters to follow.
