Death's Kiss (A Twisted Fate Book 2) by Lee McCormick

If you're looking for a darker romance story that'll have you wondering how they'll ever work together, this is for you! A reaper finds his soulmate and has to fight to keep him alive and by his side.

From the blurb:

There are rules that keep the universe in line, that keep Death and Fate balanced in a delicate dance.

A Reaper can’t feel.
A Reaper can’t love.
A Reaper can’t die.

Sephtis

Reapers can’t feel. We aren’t born. We’re created from the essence of the dead, from Death himself breathing us into existence. We have one purpose.

Ferry mortals to the afterlife so they can be judged, weighed, and born anew.

I’ve taken countless human souls, and I’ve never cared… until I met a human who made me throw everything away for the chance to feel him for just a moment before he died.

And then… I saw his twin brother.

Cole

I don’t know who the man is, but I hate him. He was with Caiden when he died. He was there when I couldn’t be.

And now he won’t leave me alone. I think about him all the time. I dream about him.

All I want is for him to get out of my head.

All I want is to know why he’s looking at me like I’m the only thing he can see.

And all I want to know is why, when I nearly die, is he there to take my hand?

Death’s Kiss is a dual POV MM Romance about a Reaper and the human he’d do anything to keep, even if it means defying his very nature and going against Fate. Expect intense emotions and a journey of grief and love. HEA guaranteed. While it can be read as a standalone, the series is best enjoyed in order.

Angel's review:

I'm not super familiar with Lee's reading, prior to reading this story, (Death's Kiss), I've only read one other book by them. And I have to say I'm looking forward to hopefully reading more by them!

I personally enjoy dark romance, sometimes it can be a bit hot or miss but I think Lee nailed it with Sephtis and Cole. These two were like oil and water, oh my goodness. Cole absolutely hated Sephtis for a good portion of this book, meanwhile Sephtis is just doing everything he can to try to keep his soulmate safe.

At first I thought there was no way these two were going to make it as a couple, or survive the dogs that were always on their tails. But! They did survive, and they did make their relationship work even if Cole did start out hating Sephtis.

I have to say I loved the big moment the book was leading up to where Death quite literally came for both of these men. (You'll know that I mean once you read the book .)) The scene that transpired that event was well written and all the loopholes that were discussed made the plot even more interesting.

And Caiden's character was brilliant! I love how his soul was incorporated throughout the story, he may have not had had a very big role, but the part he played was truly special.

SNik's review:

Second in series (A Twisted Fate), best if read in order. Paranormal. One sided adversarial to lovers. Soulmates. Slow burn. Dual POV. Heed content warnings.

Sephtis is a reaper for death and his interactions with terminally ill Caiden make him want to feel for the first time. Caiden’s death brings his twin Cole into contact with Sephtis and the reaper realizes Cole is his soulmate, but Cole hates Sephtis for his part in Caiden’s death.

This story is full of emotional ups and downs, revolving primarily around grief and unrequited love. Very intense and descriptive writing made this read interesting and heart wrenching, but the pull between Cole and Sephtis wasn’t as strong as I hoped. With Sephtis being empathetic with his absolute commitment to his soul bond versus Cole’s long term anger and then final acceptance of his relationship with Sephtis, they took a while to get to their HEA. Overall, a good story with an interesting world build as I like to think of soulmates coming together in each lifetime over and over again.
