The kind, gentle, nurturing, and nature loving Nyx, finally starts his healing journey and just so happens to fall in love along the way. Mates that certainly meet the definition of fated.
From the blurb:
Ninety-one years ago, I stumbled upon a window to a strange new world. Beyond, there were blue skies and odd trees, and flowers like nothing I’d ever seen. Curiosity got the better of me, and life as I knew it changed forever.
Ljómur was the military’s best kept secret. Behind those walls, I was experimented on and studied, torn apart and put back together. Caged, collared, and stripped of any sense of identity I once had.
A lifelong prisoner.
Now I’m free, and my former hell has been destroyed. Every bar that once confined me lies in ruin, yet I still can’t escape my cage.
It’s been a month since we discovered what the military was trying to do, and since I swore to bring the group to the rifts. Ever since, I’ve been living in fear of the day they’ll call on me to fulfill that promise.
No one knows better than me what’s at stake, but most days, my mind is not my own. When I’m lost inside my thoughts, only one person is able to reach me. Reyes breaks through the clouds and pulls me from that dark place in a way the others can’t. He tells me I still have something to give, but I’m not so sure that’s true.
I’m just a broken thing, after all, and those can’t always be fixed.
Author's note: Nyx is a First Person Dual POV MM Monster Romance series with explicit content intended for readers 18+. It is the second in a series that will have an overarching storyline carrying between books. While this series ends with a guaranteed HEA, individual books end on more of a HFN basis. The feature couple's story will be resolved, though there will be some unanswered questions and mild cliffhangers that lead into the next in the series.
Angel's review:
Oh, my poor sweet Nyx! I've been eagerly waiting for Nyx's story ever since his character was first introduced in the beginning of this series, and I can happily say it was well worth the wait.
Nyx has been held captive by scientists and the military for decades, only knowing pain, hunger, and torture. He never had a choice, or a chance. Until Ronan freed him from his cage and gave him a chance at living, and there he grew in ways no one imagined.
I absolutely adore Nyx, when he was mentioned in the previous books I was always curious about him and this book definitely satiated those curiosities. While his story is sad, and heartbreaking at times, it's also really beautiful. His journey is one of growth, acceptance, self-love, learning scary new things, and healing. Compared to the other books in this series, this one is lighter on the angst which I liked, I think that was the right call for Nyx's story.
I absolutely adore reading about these scenes where Nyx and Reyes were in the gardening harvesting vegetables, or swimming in the creek, or eating muffins.. those moments provided such a great contrast and relief to the great but (heavy at times) plotline. I personally have enjoyed the overarching plot and I am looking forward to it continuing. One thing I will note on is the plot didn't really move forward much in this book, this one I feel is mainly focused of Nyx's healing and recovery as well as his blossoming romance with Reyes. Which I loved! But if you were looking for the main plot to progress more in this story, you're not going to find as much of that happening in this one.
All in all, I'm really excited to see where this series and this group of characters goes next. I am also very curious about Xeni's mate...
SNik's review:
Third in series (Mates Mark), best if read in order. Paranormal dystopian. Fated mates. Hurt/comfort. Found family. Slow burn. Dual POV. Mild cliffhanger. Heed content warnings.
Since he first met Nyx, Reyes has been entranced. But he has always been careful, and only wants to protect Nyx, knowing that Nyx had suffered for years of torture and experimentation.
What begins as interest and attraction grows into a friendship and then unexpectedly shifts for Nyx and Reyes as they discover they are mates. Full of all sorts of hurt/comfort moments, Reyes is caring, patient, kind and committed to being a support for Nyx as Nyx slowly blossoms under his attention. I really enjoyed every moment once they discovered they were mates, the honest communication, the desperate importance of just having each other, and the sweetness of both characters. I really like this found family and their mutual protectiveness of each other as well as the idea of the group expanding and finding more about the fated mate bond.
