Adventure above the high seas in this new series from Michele Notaro and TJ Rose. Join an amazing duo as they careen through danger together, find a forever kind of love, and build a supportive family in a fantastical world filled with magic, airships, dragons and sea serpents.
From the blurb:
Three rules for surviving aboard The Black Wraith:
Rule 1: Never dare to challenge the wicked captain.
Rule 2: Never reveal your secret magical powers.
Rule 3: Absolutely don’t fall in love with the mysterious, unfairly attractive first mate…
Kaspar
How in the world did I end up in the cargo hold of the most notorious pirate ship ever?
Holy phoenix tails, I’m in trouble.
Running from the law is bad enough, but now I’m terrified of the scary pirate captain and his petrifying crew. One wrong move, and I'm sea serpent bait.
I’m not sure I can find my place among this crew of cunning pirates. But then there’s him—Maximus Blackwood. The first mate, known as The Reaper to all others, pulls me in with his sad eyes, his hidden kindness, and those rare smiles he saves only for me. Between battles and secret meetings in the crow's nest, something undeniable grows between us.
I should keep away. But when he looks at me like I'm the freedom he's been searching for, how can I possibly resist?
Maximus
I found him in the cargo hold.
Pale skin, freckles, and a defiance that outweighed his fear.
For years, I've kept The Black Wraith's aeronauts in line, my reputation as The Reaper ensuring our survival. I don't have time for distractions—especially not stowaways with secrets and an irritating talent for seeing through me.
Kaspar Ward is trouble personified. He doesn't belong in our world of air battles and plunder, asking questions, watching me with those perceptive, pretty green eyes.
Now I find myself teaching him how to survive Captain Van Jagger's brutal command while fighting my own battle—keeping my growing fascination with him hidden from a crew that shows no mercy to weakness.
Danger and desire collide in The Sky Pirate's Stowaway, the first book in The Black Wraith series, an MM romantasy which will sweep you off your feet and into the endless skies.
SNik's review:
First in series (The Black Wraith). Fantasy. Found family. Hurt/comfort. Disability representation. Slow burn. Dual POV. Cliffhanger. Heed content warnings.
Kaspar is a fugitive with hidden magical powers trying to escape the authorities but instead finds himself on a notorious pirate ship and fearing for his life all over again. Max has to keep a tight rein on his emotions and those he commands as the first mate on the Black Wraith, never expecting to meet a young man that makes him want to trust and love again.
Wow this was an amazing story from start to finish. So much action, adventure, friendship, loyalty, and a romance to rival any other. Both Kaspar and Max are intelligent, capable, survivors, and so head over heels for each other, I loved everything about them. This book had a wonderful world build, secondary characters that were interesting and supportive, an adventure that was tense and exciting, and two main characters that deserve and find love with their special person and are willing to risk everything to be together. I am desperate for more.
Molly Otto's review:
Kas (Ghost) secret is found out forcing him to become a stowaway on an air ship, what Kas doesn't know its one of the most notorious pirate ships in the air! Reaper (Max) never planned to be a pirate yet life doesn't always work out the way you planned. These two are immediately drawn into one another and slowly allow the other in even when Kas plans in leaving as soon as he is able. This is one of those slow burns that draws you in and holds on til you're full stopped hooked. And than you hit 80% and be ready for a ride! The thrills are next level that make you not be able to put your kindle down until you finish.
A great debut of the duet of TJ Rose & Michele Notaro, the two authors play beautifully off one another. You can feel each of their voices yet they mingle so well you're not quite sure who is writing what. I cannot wait to see what's next in this world.
This does end on a soft cliffhanger with a HFN for the couple.
When these two authors announced they were writing a series together I was so excited! I adore both of their writing styles separately, so when they said they were writing together I was excited to see what they could do combining their talents.
While it did take me a bit to get into this story, once I did I was immersed in a world full of thievery, dragons, sand monsters, evil crew mates, magic, and love. I respect how these two went all in on the sky Pirate's idea and how they made the writing style and world building match. All the swashbuckling pirates and the pirate lingo was interesting to read about and helped make the story more immersive.
Kas and Max couldn't be more different from each other but somehow, overtime, they let their walls down and opened up to each other. I liked how their romance was more angst-y, there was no insta love between them, it took work and time, and lots of talking to make things work between these two men. And that moment when they finally stopped fighting their feelings? That moment changed everything!
The MC's are great but you want to know who else is great too? The side characters! I loved seeing each and every one of their personalities shine through, they were all so unique and full of their own exuberance. I loved getting to know each of them as Kas got to do so, the found family these pirates created with each other on their ship is really beautiful.
Things weren't smooth sailing for them though, and the way this book ended off shows that they have a lot of plotting on their future. I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes from here, and I really hope Cody is okay.
