The Lookout's Ghost by A. Knightley

I'm absolutely blown away and still thinking about this book, and these characters. This will become a story I revisit for sure!

From the blurb:

Reece West

I don’t believe in ghosts. I also don’t believe in cottage cheese as a main food group, but sometimes in life, we are forced to confront when we’re wrong.

Thankfully, I was only mistaken about the ghosts.

At thirty-four years old, I’m arguably too young to have a midlife crisis, but a life-changing diagnosis followed swiftly by a caustic breakup seems to have done the trick. Reeling, I’ve traveled home to Ponderosa, Idaho, Gateway to Nowhere, to spend the summer high above the forest in a remote fire lookout tower.

An escape from the maelstrom my life has become should be good for me, right? Except solitude is difficult to come by when you aren’t actually alone. Despite its name, the very last thing I expect to find living with me in Dead Man’s Lookout is, well, a dead man. Especially not one as shockingly kind, attractive, and funny as Charlie Randolph.

The only problem is, he’s maybe, probably, a serial killer. Or is he?

Suddenly, I’m thrust into a decades-old cold case involving six murdered hikers and one (not so) missing fire lookout. When history begins to repeat itself, falling for a ghost is the least of my concerns. But nothing is ever as it seems in Ponderosa, and I’m not sure if Charlie and I are strong enough to weather the truth when we realize Death isn’t lurking in the shadows—it’s already inside.

The Lookout’s Ghost is a heart-stopping paranormal romance with plenty of mystery and suspense to go around. Look out and watch your step if you dare enter the Gateway to Nowhere, or you just may come face-to-face with the cold-blooded killer who hunts there.

Angel's review:

When I read the blurb for this book I was very intrigued, it sounded like the plot to a good movie, or even a video game. The way the blurb was written just instantly piqued my interest and made me want to find out more, and let me tell you, the journey was so intense and incredible!

A. Knightley is a new-to-me author, after reading this though I definitely think I will be keeping an eye on their work from now on. Their writing style is really unique, they put so much effort into intricately describing everything that the characters were seeing. The types of trees, the history behind the illustrious lake, the mystery surrounding the haunted watch tower, the side characters, the mangy raccoon, everything was just so detailed! With all of the elaborate details I could really envision this book come to life, I could picture what the characters were seeing and that's something that doesn't happen very often for me.

I talked about the detailed scenery and the details that went into, well, everything, but I want to talk about the characters themselves. Reece and Charlie absolutely have my heart. One man is a ghost who's been left alone in the cold and in the dark, and the other is a man who is technically alive, but feels more like a ghost than a living person. At first glance you wouldn't think these two could work together, I mean, one of them are dead... But the more you read the more you learn, and something I found really beautiful is how love literally brought Charlie and Reece back to life. Love saved these men in more ways than one, and it wasn't in a cliché way, but in a powerful and meaningful way. Truly so beautiful.

I absolutely LOVED the dialogue and the commentary, it was intense, witty, comedic, serious at times but in a good way, sassy, snarky, and the banter between Charlie and Reece was so adorable! Even when they were accidentally scaring each other in the beginning they had such an adorable relationship with one another that further blossomed the more time they spent with each other.

This isn't your conventional romance story, it is so much more than that. There are so many different layers and depth to this story, once you think you have one thing figured out, another layer gets peeled back and you're left guessing again. I enjoyed all the nuances this book had and how the plot was engaging and dynamic, the author kept me on my toes trying to figure out who the bad guy actually was. I truly loved every part of this book and I really hope that the author writes Tate's story in the future. Him and Sunglasses have something going on. And his frenemie relationship with Reece is hilarious!

This book will surprise you in more ways than one, it's not just about a ghost or a murder mystery.. It's not just about a man who got a life changing diagnosis learning how to cope... It's about all those things while also being about so much more too. Please give this book a read, I don't think you'll regret it. I certainly didn't.
