Playing the Game (Love Goals Book 2) by Kristian Parker

Playing the Game is by new to me author Kristian Parker. I picked it up because the blurb sounded interesting and I really enjoy sports romances.

From the blurb:

After Brockton FC publicly declared itself a safe space for gay players, Swedish midfielder Jonas Haber knew he had to be part of it—even if it meant transferring from their fiercest rivals, Canonbury.

Switching sides is never easy. Jonas is banking on the players and the fans giving him a chance.

Brockton captain Adam Williams is tasked with making sure Jonas and two other new players settle in with no drama. Yet when he meets Jonas, everything changes in the blink of an eye.

Bisexual Adam isn’t out, and after seeing his teammates’ personal lives splashed across the tabloids, he intends on keeping it that way.

Besides, it’s probably all in his head.
But…what if Jonas feels the same?
And what happens when staying professional becomes the hardest game of all?

Lori C's review:

While I missed book one, this story can be read as a standalone with little hints of what happened in book one. I enjoyed reading about Adam and Jonas. Their story isn’t a smooth one. Both men are private, and while Jonas is out, Adam is not. In fact, Adam couldn’t even really tell Jonas how he felt at first. What he did manage to say was that they had to stay quiet, the team didn’t need the drama.

As I read, I really felt for Jonas. He has trust issues and this situationship with Adam isn’t easy on him. Then I ping ponged back to caring that Adam had so much going on. I really appreciated that both main characters were so likable, so human. Just the bits and pieces we read about Udo and Steven make me want to read their book asap. As to the cast of secondary characters, they are all likable and make a solid crew. As a reader, I want to see who comes next. That makes this book a solid read for me and brings me excitement for the next book.

Heather's Review:

I love where this series is heading!  Jonas and Adam are both wounded souls with so much going on around them... and the third act craziness is the perfect thing to scramble their relationship... giving them a reason to really and truly commit to each other.    This was a well paced book with lots of room for a bit of angst and a look at different family dynamics.  I enjoy watching the whole team interact and seeing where this series might go next!
