Zel (The GriMM Tales) by Amanda Meuwissen

Part of the GRIMM TALES, ZEL, is the mm retelling of the classic story of Rapunzel. Zel and Ulrich are the second couple in the GriMM Tales series to get their HEA's, and let me tell you, they have quite a journey ahead of them to get there!

From the blurb:

An assassin in disguise is not meant to fall for their target... but Rapunzel’s life has never gone as planned.

Twenty winters ago, before the Great Famine, Zel’s parents were caught stealing the fabled sorcerer’s rapunzel, the magical lettuce that grows around the base of his tall tower in the wood. He released them under the condition that when their yet unborn babe reaches adulthood, she will stay with him for one month before becoming his bride.

Then Zel was born a boy.

Only Zel’s parents know the truth, but while he was raised to pretend to be a girl, he will be no monster’s bride. He will use his month in the tower to unravel the mystery of the sorcerer’s immortality, so he might slay his would-be bridegroom and claim the tower and its treasures for the Thieves Guild.

What Zel does not know is that the sorcerer, Ulrich, has his own deceptions planned, and their journey of secrets, seduction, and identity might lead to revelations neither expect.

Each book set in the GriMM fairytale world can be read as a standalone and contains its own Happily Ever After story. Though you will definitely want to read each one, as the tales are connected to each other in multiple magical ways, this story features possessive mutual pining from enemies to lovers, secret motives, crossdressing that becomes gender identity discovery, and a guaranteed happy for now ending.

Molly Otto's review:

Having read Amanda in the past, I was excited to see her take on this classic story. As per her usual is writing, she did a phenomenal job of world building, where you feel you are in this magical place they have built. The plot kept you with the story just not as engaged as I am usually when reading this particular author. The twists and turns where on their own level, where you honestly did not see what was coming next for these two and if they could work past their differences. As individuals they are bloody brilliant and deserve all the happiness in the world, as a couple the chemistry for me was not there. So overall, worth reading if you are not looking for a epic romance but a fun filled action fantasy adventure. This aspect of the story delivers beautifully and worth reading for that aspect on its own.

Angel's review:

🥬"You can be whoever you wish to be. Man, woman, neither, both. Whatever the answer, that is what I shall call you, how I shall see you, and others should too.”🥬

I'm in love with this series, Zel and Ulrich were just fantastic! Reading this book made me feel reminiscent of when I read Rapunzel when I was younger, and of moments when I watch Tangled, this book invoked such nostalgia while also being completely unique. I absolutely am enamored with the world this series takes place in, I love the tone in which these books are written in. It makes you feel completely immersed in the rustic, fairytale realm, and really helps convey the time period as well.

I enjoy when a book surprises me, and all of the surprises and secrets that got unraveled in this story were done so well, I am obsessed! There were facts that were told that I wasn't expecting, and both Zel and Ulrich's characters were constantly surprising me. I loved how neither of them fit the labels society tried to slap on them, they forged their own paths to become who they truly are, and I find that so incredibly beautiful and inspiring.

The storytelling, the tone, the detailed descriptions of not only the scenery but of the vegetables, trinkets, and characters, along with the plot itself, was just all done really marvelously. I very much enjoyed reading this and I'm so excited to read the next book in what is becoming my new favorite series.
