Little Red Riding Hood (The GriMM Tales) by TJ Rose

What do you get when you mix Fractured Fairy Tales with some of the best queer romance authors? The most delightful new series…The GriMM Tales! A magical MM retelling of a classic fairytale with a twist that'll have you wanting more!

From the blurb:

Getting eaten by a wolf wasn't exactly what Red had in mind when he finally escaped the palace walls.

Abandoned as a babe and raised in The Queen's court, Red has always been an outsider, with his mismatched eyes and sharp tongue keeping most at arm's length. When he ventures towards the Dark Forest on an important quest to save his kingdom from the grips of a cruel famine, the last thing he needs is a massive grey wolf stalking him. A wolf who makes it clear that Red looks like a very tasty snack.

Wilhelm ‘Wim’ Hoffmann is dangerous, infuriating, and absolutely not to be trusted—no matter how his deep voice makes Red’s traitorous heart stutter. If only Wim wasn't devastatingly handsome, if only he didn’t cook up such sumptuous meals and use his superior body heat to keep Red warm at night… Then Red might remember that wolves aren't supposed to be trusted, especially ones with secrets as dark as the forest itself.

But Red knows better than to fall for a wild creature's charms... Right?

Surviving these treacherous woods—where slave traders and bandits lurk around every corner—will require more than just an uneasy alliance. As their bond deepens with each shared danger, Red begins to wonder if being devoured by a big bad wolf might not be so bad after all...

This GriMM Tales retelling features one red-cloaked menace and the wolf that sees through his armour, touch him and get eaten alive, a smidge of an age gap, a dash of primal play, a wolf who wants strokes, two bedrolls but let’s share one for warmth & a HEA.

Each book set in the GriMM fairytale world can be read as a standalone and contains its own Happily Ever After story. Though you’ll definitely want to read each one, as the tales are connected to each other in multiple magical ways.

Mary C.'s review:

Woof! What a great start to what should be a clever retelling of some our favorite fairy tales! Ok, I just got the whole GriMM hint! Red and Wim each with their quests ended up making their way together. Of course there are side quests, adventures, smexy times. I loved Wim immediately, he was at once fierce but so careful and so tender. It took a bit for Red to charm me. As we learned more about his childhood, I just wanted to hug on him. I love the humor, love of the wolf pack, the plot twists that kept me quessing. Oh, and all the various characters I’m hoping will be in the rest of the stories! And maybe we will get more Wim and Red!

Angel's review:

Ever since this series was announced I've been very excited to read all of the books within it. I'm quite familiar with the classic fairytale's so to see them brought to life with characters from the LGBTQIA+ community is the best of both worlds. TJ didn't just do a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, they took that fairytale and made it completely their own. There was some familiarity of course, which they did a fantastic job at achieving, but there was also uniqueness added to it which I loved! Seeing how TJ took a classic fairytale and how they put their own spin on it to make it their own is just making me even more excited to read the rest of this exciting series!

Red and Wim have captured my heart and attention wholeheartedly! The way this story is written is very much done with that old time-y fairytale esque style, which I quite enjoyed. The tone in which the story was written and described really helps to immerse you within the story. From the very first page to the last one, I was hooked. And even now that I'm finished, I'm still thinking about Red, Wim, and little Tobias, (who is so adorable!)

Red is sassy, bold, determined, and a bit of a brat. (Wim brings it out of him.) And Wim is mischievous, snarky, a bit stubborn, and knows exactly how to deal with Red's brattiness. I really enjoyed seeing their relationship developed and grew as they journeyed to the Dark Forest. There wasn't insta-love or even Insta-Lust, their relationship just progressed in a really natural way.

Wim being a Wildling was unique and a fun twist on the classic fairytale. I thought the way his curse was written about was done well and I liked how Red was the only one who could bring him out of his Feral state.

I also liked how both of these men were on their own missions that ended up leading them to the same place, and to the same person, and that twist?? I was holding my breath while reading it, hoping that Red would choose Wim over the Queen. (Spoiler Alert::: he made the right choice!!)

The banter, the dialogue between all of the characters, (the good and evil ones), the scenery being so intricately detailed and described, the characters being so full of life and having so many different layers to them , the romance story that unfolded between Red and Wim all combined together, just made this story into a truly exceptional one.

Lori C's review:

Red is a an archer in the Queen’s court. She isn’t a nice Queen, she is cruel and uses her tongue as a lash. She sends Red out on a royal quest to put a golden arrow through the heart of an old witch. Just days into his journey, he meets Wilhelm a wildling. Wim has been cursed a soul stealer and sometimes becomes a feral creature who kills. They decide to join together to find their way to the Dark Forest. Little does Red know that they are on a similar quest.

I did not want this story to end! It is quite twisty to me, although I never read the Grimm version just the sanitized children’s tale. I enjoyed the adventures of Wim and Red. It felt like they all fit the story and kept me engaged as I read from chapter to chapter. I liked how Wim and Red became friends and then more. My heart broke for Red and how little self-worth he had. He truly is a stubborn, mouthy soul that hides a fragile heart. It made me angry at the Queen, who in the end is a totally evil creature even worse than my own imagination. I cried huge tears for Red finding out the truth of his past and having to sacrifice it all. The ending is fabulous! There are little nuggets that leave me thinking what book is next, which one has this character or that one. I am very excited to see what comes next. Make sure you read to the very end too to snag that novelette.
