Captured and tortured was not on Isaac's bingo card, but pain doesn't bother him and he just needs to escape and report back to his superiors like he always does. But Shadrach is drawn to the Paladin and sees how Isaac's motivations have been manipulated, can he convince the man to give him and the traitor group a chance?
From the blurb:
He’s a weapon of light. But there’s darkness in his heart.
Isaac Morrow has always been different. A paladin without a moral compass of his own, his bloodlust lives on a short leash held by his commander. He relies on the word of his superiors to guide him, and he’s never been allowed to question them. It’s the only life he’s ever known.
When he’s captured by the Sentinels, he suddenly finds himself thrust into a world of unknowns. There’s no one to tell him right from wrong while he’s held captive—just a handsome demon named Shadrach who speaks to the darkness he’s always been forced to deny.
Shadrach doesn’t want to fall for a human, even if it’s been foretold, but Isaac isn’t like anyone he’s ever met. There’s a darkness in Isaac’s soul that matches his own, and Shadrach longs for more. He wants to help Isaac break the guild’s chains and show him that they belong together, but Isaac fears the guild more than anything.
As Shadrach uncovers more about Isaac’s past, he learns how insidious the guild’s current leaders truly are. Enemies are closing in from all sides when Lilith, the leader of the halfling demons, puts out a bounty on an ally’s head. Will Isaac choose Shadrach and the darkness they share, or will he let the guild turn him into another enemy they’re meant to fight?
SNik's review:
Fifth in series (Dark Delights), must be read in order due to overarching storyline. Paranormal. Adversarial to lovers. Found family. Light BDSM. Slow burn. Dual POV. Heed content warnings.
Since he was a small child Isaac was told he was different for enjoying violence, but he was also trained never to question following orders and receiving punishments from his Paladin superiors. When he is captured by the traitor humans and their demons, he is desperate to escape and report back to the Paladins, even though the demon Shadrach is beyond tempting.
This was an unexpected arc story as Shadrach has always been the jaded demon of the group and he falls immediately into protective and cinnamon roll caring for the human he wants to have forever. Isaac has a tortured past and has never been able to make his own decisions so his entry into the group is fraught with mistrust and indecision. I enjoyed that Shadrach appreciates Isaac’s darkness and Isaac feels true freedom and is able to be comfortable in his actions and needs when getting attention and complete commitment from Shadrach. I do wish there was more background and “getting to know you” between them, but all the relationships in this series seem fated which works for the couples and the stories.
