Mika Nix is back with an all new series, the Damned Mercenaries, a spin-off from their Drake Security series. ACCIDENTAL BOND kicks off with a troublemaker dragon and cinnamon roll demon fated mates pairing.
From the blurb:
I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life, but accidentally becoming a mercenary for a demon might be the biggest one yet…
My inner dragon has always been more like a devil on my shoulder, talking me into making bad decisions and creating chaos. I have a hoard full of demon artifacts, each one likely to cost me my life if the owners ever come after me.
I thought accidentally becoming a mercenary was the worst mistake I would make in a single day… until I inadvertently mated myself to a demon. It’s not my fault his mating ring was so pretty!
It’ll be fine… all I have to do is fulfill my contract, not do anything else to make things worse, and avoid falling for the surprisingly sweet, himbo demon who thinks I’m his mate. Should be easy… right?
Molly Otto's review:
Most dragons are impulsive to follow their dragons' horde intentions, and then you have Mack, who takes that to the next level. When on his latest heist of a dragon artifact, he unknowingly signs a life contract with Auri. Auri leads him to the Damned Mercenaries, a mixed group of supes with a bond stronger than most families. These people will do anything and everything to protect their own. Drax, also a demon, is part of this band of misfits and is immediately drawn to the dragon. Macks first mission leads him on a trail of a mage who is really a good guy just on the wrong side this round. Okay, at least I feel he's a good guy. Only time will tell. The team helps Mack accomplish his mission while showing what it is like to truly fit in for the first time in his life. It was nice to see each of these separate bonds grow, where none feel forced, just as it should all play out.
Mack, being Mack, accidentally bonds to his mate Drax and doesn't trust this was supposed to happen. i really enjoyed this was a fated mates story, yet it took them time and reassurance to build the bond. not to mention accepting his new life as part of the Damned Mercanries. The bond of the team will have you keep coming back for more from this universe to see how the pairs play out.
SNik's review:
First in series (Damned Mercenaries). Paranormal. Fated mates. Found family. Dual POV.
This is a spin-off from the Drake Security series, with a troublemaker dragon that keeps getting caught up in problems, stealing and almost getting caught, then making a deal with a demon without reading the contract, and oh yeah, grabbing a mating ring and bonding to an unusually sweet fellow mercenary demon.
Sure Mack doesn’t want to be mated to Drax, but he’s never mean about it, and Drax is so lovely in his happiness and desire to be the best mate for Mack. Luckily they are fated, and the bond between them allows for the attraction and feelings to grow but not feel forced which I really enjoyed. This story happens at a fast pace, but it does allow for moments for Drax and Mack to appreciate each other and learn how their bond really brings them each a sense of joy and completeness. There is plenty of adventure in this story, a found family loyal to the last breath, and some steamy interactions between Drax and Mack. A great start to a new series.
When Mac's character first got introduced in the Drake Security series, I was beyond curious about him. Whenever he was mentioned in those books it was always with a fond exasperation.. mainly because of Mac's dragon's interest in shiny things often gets him into heaps of trouble. Getting his story was really interesting and I love the new world we're introduced to!
After Mac almost gets caught, (again) stealing a shiny artifact, he stumbled upon a demon who offers him a deal he can't refuse. He didn't really think through his deal until it sets in that he has to uphold his end of the deal, or else.... He did his best not to make things worse but his precious dragon was captivated by Drax's shiny ring... And what his dragon wants, his dragon gets...
I absolutely adore Mac and Mac's dragon, their relationship is hilarious to read and the tug-of-war relationship they have is endearing. While Mac tries to fight what it means when he stole Drax's ring, his dragon tries to get closer to the sweet demon. I liked the push and pull and how prominent Mac's dragon was throughout the story. I love when a shifter book actually showcases the shifter characters, and this book did just that!
Drax is absolutely precious, he doesn't understand pop culture references or most figures of speech, but he makes up for that by being authentically himself and doing what he can to please his mate. Even when he didn't understand why Mac was fighting their bond, he was still patient, kind, encouraging, and most of all, determined to show Mac they are meant to be together. He didn't expect to be mated to a dragon with sticky fingers but he can't imagine a better mate.
Now onto the 'main event', that being their hunt for the cursed amulet. I liked that the main plotline, while focused on building Mac and Drax's relationship, was also focused on providing a detailed play by play on their journey to find the cursed amulet Auri told them to find. I also enjoyed how big of a role the side characters have, each one played a part to the storyline and all of them together convey a found family dynamic that I absolutely adore! I'm so excited to read the next book to find out what's going on with Rune and how Atlas knew something was wrong!
The accidental bond between Mack and Drax adds excitement to the story, sparking a romance that grows from an unexpected connection into something both tender and passionate. Drax’s sweetness is a perfect foil to Mack's more guarded nature, and their chemistry is warm and natural, with plenty of moments of humor and heart.
I really enjoyed the adventures they experienced while Mack had to acquire the demon artifact for Auri, the demon Mack made a deal with.
The discovery of the truth behind Mack’s hoard was very exciting for me, I loved that little twist.
This book is a great pick for anyone seeking a feel-good, steamy romance with a touch of magic. The accidental bonding premise is done in a fresh way, and the characters' growth as they navigate their connection makes for a satisfying and sweet read. It’s a perfect mix of fun, warmth, and paranormal allure.
