The writing is fantastic, a great way with words and very entertaining. The world building is superbly described, it's a little more detailed in places but that doesn't detract, the characters are great - I love Dex! - and there is a lot of action and suspense.
I like reading crime fiction, but I also like reading fantasy and this book is a perfect combination where all the action remains realistic and understandable. And once I started reading, the story really captivated me.
This was partly due to Dex, who I very quickly took to my heart. He is perceptive, has great powers of observation, is honest and determined and has a strong sense of justice, which unexpectedly got him into trouble. He is a family man and has a loving relationship with his father and brother, in short, you just have to like him! Oh yes, he has a real sense of humor that made me smile more than once while reading.
Secondly, the book is very entertaining and amusing. There are lots of cops, normal ones and the Thirds unit, which also includes shifters. There are prejudices against the shifters, but also a great team dynamic and lots of action, suspense, emotion and humor! And it's a bit romantic, the attraction is definitely there, but there's no happy ending yet.
It actually took me a while to warm up to Sloane, the team leader of the Thirds unit Dex is transferred to, due to his behavior. But as a reader, I don't have to love all the characters right from the start.
This story is one of the few that captivated me from start to finish and as soon as I emerged from the book, I want more! More Dex and more of the Thirds unit!
Hell & High Water is the start of an intriguing series that I absolutely recommend already! I can't wait for the release date of the next book!
