A great and thrilling book by a new-to-me author! Mystery and spice and everything nice. This book will leave you on the edge of your seat.
From the blurb:
Max Salgado knows what it means to lose everything. Once a rising star in the LAPD, his life was forever changed when The LA Butcher—a sadistic serial killer—tortured and nearly killed him. Now, years later, Max has found solace working as a museum curator, far away from the dangers of his past. Or so he thought.
When cryptic messages and haunting clues resurface, Max fears the worst: the killer who broke him might still be alive. But amidst the chaos, he meets Dr. Ben Carter, a compassionate surgeon who makes him feel something he hasn’t in years—hope. As their connection deepens, Max begins to believe he might finally find love again.
What Max doesn’t know is that Ben holds a secret of his own, and he’s terrified of how the truth might destroy the fragile bond growing between them.
As the shadows of the past close in, Max must navigate a web of danger and deceit while holding onto the possibility of a future with Ben. Together, they’ll face a harrowing journey where survival means not just staying alive, but daring to embrace love.
Will Max find the courage to trust Ben with his heart? Or will the killer who haunts him destroy his chance at finding his forever love?
Thera Rhodes review:
As a mystery /suspense story this book was amazing. It had all the right elements. For a romantic book it was lacking in the romance. There is some but not enough in my opinion. And I almost wanted Max with a different character. Overall the story was great I just missed having more romance in the story.
When I started this story I was immediately pulled into Max's past and I needed to learn more about what happened to him, and what was going to happen next. I want to say that while this book is listed as a romance mystery, its more of a suspenseful thriller full of mystery with a little dash of romance. There was a love interest, that interest being Ben, and while his character was great and was mentioned throughout the story, their romance just wasn't the main focus of this story.
This story at its core is about Max being hunted by the man he believed to be dead that held him captive and tortured him. And now he's back and is stalking Max and those he loves, leaving clues behind letting Max know exactly who's been watching him. That's what this story is about and in that regard it was written really well!
The book in its entirety was well written, the characters all brought their own uniqueness to the story and added so much helpful dialogue. My favorite side characters was Tubs and L, they both were so sassy and full of life in their own ways which I really loved. The flow felt natural and the story progressed smoothly, nothing felt glossed over or too rushed. I enjoyed how nothing got resolved too fast, the events happened slowly, and each new mystery will captivate you and make you eager to find out how the story will end. All in all, a good story by a new-to-me author.
