Road Trip by Sarah Honey and Lisa Henry is everything you need in a road trip book. Best friends to lovers at its finest, there's a pure, true magic here and you feel and breathe the love between these two characters. This book has to go on your summer reading list, this story is the perfect summertime read!
From the blurb:
One secret gay crush. One journey of self discovery. One epic road trip.
Matt Landers and Jacob Mercer have been ride or die best friends forever. But now, on the cusp of adulthood, it’s all about to change. When summer is over, Jacob is going away to college and Matt will be stuck in Cape Charles, Virginia. Before that happens, they’ve got a plan for one more epic adventure—a road trip all the way across the country to California.
But if they want to borrow Jacob’s dad’s car, there are rules they have to follow.
1. Keep your location tracking on.
2. Check your tire pressure.
3. Be back a week before school starts.
4. Don’t spend your college money.
5. Check in every 24 hours.
There’s nothing in the rules about arguing over road trip playlists, eating too many gas station snacks, or sleeping in the back of the car. There’s also nothing about confessing your secret gay crush, falling for your best friend, and learning how to protect the heart of someone you love.
Summer might be short, but the things Matt and Jacob are going to learn about themselves will last a lifetime.
Angel's review:
As soon as I read the blurb for this book I knew I had to read this myself, it sounded way too good to miss out on. I am so happy and thrilled that I not only was able to read it, but I'm so happy that it is such a good book.
Matt and Jacob have been best friends for years, they've grown up together and are there for each other always. But with the end of summer looming and there being a deadline on when Jacob goes off to college, their friendship feels like it's being threatened. To try to celebrate their last few weeks together, Matt suggests a road trip, one last hurrah before everything changes.... What happens on there road trip was something neither of these men saw coming.
This story was honestly so cute! I would go as far as saying this fits the role of being a rom-com, there is so much humor within this story and the characters have such playful and comedic dialogue with each other. They also have serious conversations as well, but most of the time they are bantering with each other which I enjoyed reading. I absolutely adored how close these two men are, but how they still are learning new things about one another. Jacob learned that Matt was keeping things from him and while he was hurt by the secrecy, he was still supportive and was kind and caring towards his best friend. And Matt learned that there are people out there who want him around and who cares about him and who loves him.
I really liked the journey both of these men go on. I'm not just referring to the actual road trip journey itself, but the journey both of these men go on within their friendship, and how their friendship blossomed into a romantic relationship. That journey was written in such a beautiful way and it felt realistic. Everything had a really nice flow to it, all of the scenes just made sense and fit. The side characters belonged where they were, the relationship between Jacob and Matt was extraordinary, and I LOVE how steamy scenes weren't the focus. Was there a steamy scene or two? Yes. But was there a lot of steamy scenes? No.. which is what I enjoyed. These two men have such a strong relationship and bond that they have plenty of intimacy without it being s++xual intimacy, and I think that's really beautiful.
Overall a truly fantastic story that I definitely recommend reading!

Generally speaking, I am not into road trip stories, but with these two authors, I had to give it a try. And oh boy, am I glad that I gave it a try. These two are just so right for one another. Jacob & Matt have belonged together forever yet didn't hit that right time until Jacob was able to see how Matt really felt and magic they were made to be together and just fit better as a couple. with some best friends to lovers, you don't see it being better as more. However, with these two, it made sense to take that next step. A fun read with a great cameo from the Alpha Tau series that, like many, made me fall for these writers.
GreenwingReads review:
I always enjoy books by this duo and this one was no different. Matt and Jacob, lifelong friends, embark on a road trip across the country as one last hurrah before starting college. Only Jacob will be returning to east coast for college and Matt has plans to stay in California. With a country between them, Jacob and Matt both worry if their friendship will survive the distance. When on the road, they discover their feelings for each other go beyond friendship and then have to wonder if they can make a long distance romance work.
Both boys are 18 but have lived very different lives. Matt is the product of a difficult home life and divorced parents. He has trust and abandonment issues and a prickly personality designed to keep people at arm's length. The only person who can get past his defenses is Jacob. A far cry from Matt's home life, Jacob's is nearly picture perfect. He has a brother he gets along with, parents who love and support him, and many friends. But despite those differences, Jacob and Matt work together really well.
I had a soft spot for Matt. He had been hurt so many times by the people who should have loved him most, it was no wonder he didn't believe anyone, including Jacob, could truly love him forever. I adored Jacob's approach to their friendship and then their romance. He didn't just love Matt, he truly understood him as a person and took great care with him. I also really liked Jacob's family.
This story reads like a young adult novel for the most part, except for some spicy scenes. That pushes it more into new adult territory in my opinion. Bottom line, it's an enjoyable read full of heart, humor, and healing.
Road Trip is currently available as an e-book and paperback
