Solan (Monsters & Mates Book 1) by Becca Seymour

Solan by Becca Seymour, book 1 in the Monsters & Mates series, will take you to a new world full of adventure. Survival and keeping his nephew safe is the only thing on Jack's mind as they are thrust onto an alien world and surrounded by danger. But when a fiery monster named Solan declares he will protect them, there is some kind of deeper connection as they navigate their new normal.

From the blurb:

Getting a boner for the monster who saved us shouldn’t make sense in any universe. But here we are.

When a piece of Earth gets ripped into a monstrous new world, I barely have time to panic before I’m fighting for my life—and for Jamie’s. Terrafeara isn’t just dangerous; it’s a nightmare brought to life, where humans like us are hunted, enslaved, or worse.

Then there’s Solan. A beast of a warrior with horns I want to ride, fangs I want to lick, and a body built for war—and for wrecking me. He swears he’ll protect me, but his idea of protection comes with possessive touches, growled promises, and a claim I’m not sure I can resist.

But I don’t have time for this. I have a kid to keep safe. And with monsters, mercenaries, and power-hungry rulers after us, staying alive is hard enough. The only way to survive is to trust Solan, trust the rebels, and trust this connection between us that’s stronger than fear.

Because in a world designed to break us, maybe love is the sharpest weapon of all.

SNik's review:

First in series (Monsters & Mates). Paranormal/sci-fi. Fated mates. Slow burn. Single POV.

Jack’s Australian ranch has been ripped away from Earth, and now Jack and his nephew are desperately trying to survive in a new world with aliens from all sorts of other worlds. Luckily, they are saved by an alien hunter named Solan, and suddenly there is a powerful connection between Jack and Solan as Solan vows to protect them from harm.

This was an interesting concept with slow, but interesting world-building and a fish out of water in danger scenario that is enhanced as we only get Jack’s POV. I really enjoyed the bonded/fated aspect of the story as the immediate attraction grew exponentially faster and hotter, although I do wish we got more background story for both Jack and Solan. Going in readers should be aware of a lot of action and violence, plenty of secondary characters with some showing some real possibilities as interesting in the future, and a bond that is easily accepted and embraced between Jack and Solan.

Molly Otto's review:

Full of family and the sweet bond between mates, this book has plenty of sweetness to swoon over between the chaos. Jack and his nephew are transported to a monster world and those two guys are so out of their depth, it'd be funny if it wasn't so life-threatening.

The bond between uncle and nephew, and between Jack and his monster mate, Sloan, are both very well-done. And while the world development and sometimes the character development could be a little more tightened, the bonds between the little family they were building make up for it. For an introductory series with kind of a lot going on, it's a nice start and it'll be curious to see where it goes from here.

Solan is currently available as an e-book and paperback
