Ronan (Mate's Mark Book 1) by G. Eilsel

An absolutely incredible start to a new series, I am so excited to see what happens next! A human and a monster fated to be together but choosing each other no matter what.

From the blurb:

It's been almost a century since the veil fell and monsters invaded the world. We didn't give the humans an opportunity to retaliate as we charged in and took over, and I was at the head of the front lines with my sword in hand. A perfect soldier, fighting the battles that ultimately put my people in charge of this planet. Half of humanity was slaughtered, and in the decades since the invasion, things have only gotten worse. Tensions between the rebel humans and monsters grew as the climate changed, and temperatures rose as resources dwindled. The sun scorched away plants and trees, leaving behind a husk of a planet where everyone fights for survival.

The Fates were furious at our violence, and now we're trapped inside the hell we created.

We've all heard tale of the Mate's Mark, and how we're destined to find our fated mate. One human, one monster - foretold to be the cure to this cursed world and repair the damage that has been done. What was once the cause of curiosity and intrigue has turned into nothing more than a mockery. Decades have passed, and not a single pair of fated mates had been found.

Until now.

Until me.

Until the night I pull off my armor and find the mark staring back.

Author's note: Ronan is a First Person Dual POV MM Monster Romance series with explicit content intended for readers 18+. It is the first in a series that will have an overarching storyline carrying between books. While this series ends with a guaranteed HEA, individual books end on more of a HFN basis. The feature couple's story will be resolved, though there will be some unanswered questions and mild cliffhangers that lead into the next in the series.

Angel's review:

I am absolutely blown away right now, the writing of this book is incredible and impeccable! There is so much history that gets told throughout the story that infirms the readers about what happened to the world and how it came to be that way. The level of detail and backstory of everything is just fantastic and was done phenomenally!!

The characters themselves were terrific! There was so much angst between Ronan and in the beginning, rightfully so. Overtime though they learned more about each other and how to communicate better. Ronan has a gentle soul who was made to be a soldier, he cares deeply for those around him and he wishes no harm comes to those that are innocent. Cameron grew up in the world as it is now with seeing all monsters as the enemy, and he's used to people leaving him. Which is why he's extra weary of Ronan, but overtime Cameron stops flinging sharp worded barbs at Ronan and let's himself get to know the sweet monster with a heart of gold.

The aspect of Cameron and Ronan being fated mates is really unique, I've read a lot of books that feature the fated mates trope, but I have never seen it written like the way it is here before. And I love that! I love when authors can take something and make it their own, and that's exactly what happened here.

Now, while Cameron and Ronan are fantastic, and I love how their relationship is an excellent slow burner, I want to talk about the other characters that popped up. Those being Nyx, Elas, and of course, Boomerang. I thought that all of the side characters were amazing additions to the storyline, they were fantastic to the story and the characters themselves each had their own individual personalities. Something else I really enjoyed is how at the back of the book there are pictures with depictions and descriptions of each monster mentioned throughout the story. I loved that feature and thought it was such a cool way to provide additional information while still being creative and fun.

The mystery component that's within this story was intriguing, all the twists and turns just made me want to continue reading. And while the mysteriousness didn't get solved, there was more clues that were sprinkled throughout the story which has just made me eager for more books within this series.

I am absolutely looking forward to the next instalment and I hope you give this book, (and this series) a chance.

SNik's review:

First in series (Mate’s Mark). Paranormal/post-apocalyptic. Fated mates. Dual POV. HFN as the series continues with additional characters. Heed content warnings.

Ronan has been in the military his whole life, humans being the victim of worlds colliding and leaving no alien world to return to, there is a prophecy that every monster will have a fated human mate to restore the balance. Cameron has been on his own for years, wandering, running from danger, but getting caught up with some rebels and finding out he has a fated mate is a lot to handle.

This story introduces a unique world build with fated mates that have been adversarial in nature for decades, and an incredible connection that requires Cameron to risk trusting another person and a cinnamon roll alien warrior to find happiness and peace with his special person. Every moment of the adventure kept me on the edge of my seat, the banter humorous, their building relationship sweet, and the emotional confessions swoony. There is no lack of spice and chemistry between Cameron and Ronan and every moment on page together through misunderstandings and eventual possessiveness was entertaining. Such a great start to a new series, I can’t wait for more.
