Grave Situation the latest from Louisa Masters takes on her inner JRR Tolkien. This is a slow burn fantasy quest romance. Grave Situation sees reluctant hero Talon set out to find a champion to save the world. Only he might just do it himself along the way.
From the blurb:
He’s not the hero they deserve, but he’s the hero they’ve got.
No, seriously. Talon wants to know what he did to deserve this. What would make a sentient rock decide that he of all people should be the one to save the world from zombies? That’s right. Zombies. Because apparently a higher power decided that teaching magic to teenagers wasn’t enough of a challenge.
With a ridiculously attractive healer (who may or may not hate him), his sister (who he miiiight have a forbidden telepathic link with), a sentient god-like rock (that can only communicate via yes/no vibes), a disdainful dragon, and a rude matchmaking horse by his side, he just might be able to save the world.
Or die trying.
Meet Talon Silverbright. He'll save the world, but only because a rock said he has to.
Molly Otto's review:
What can I say about this book aside from this is what happens when Louisa takes on her inner JRR Tolkien. This is a beautiful epic fantasy that is, yes, a romance, but it's a quest more so. You see Talon learn to embrace who he was meant to be by slowly ever so reluctantly letting others into his life. Jaimin is a well loved healer who is thrown into this chaos and shoes. Talon, what it's like to be truly appreciated. These men, along with the rest of their party, including new and old friends, learn to trust that this journey is meant to happen and learn to trust themselves in the process. This one may be a slow burn, yet it's the only way it could have worked out to be the beauty that it should be.
Rogue's review:
- fantasy
- reluctant hero
- closed door romance
Part of what makes a book 5 stars for me, is the emotional response it invokes in me when I read it. This made me laugh out loud and cry almost uncontrollably, and then laugh again almost within the same chapter. It's such a wonderfully realised world packed full of wonderful characters, I really enjoyed this and wouldn't be averse to more Talon, Jaimin, Coryn and company.
Talon is an extremely reluctant hero - a powerful mage who loves his home comforts too much to want to go out on the road, let alone with a meddling horse as companion. However a sentient rock has other ideas and off he goes with his sister, a dragon who may hate him, and a healer who just might think he's an idiot. Along the way they pick up a fearsome fighter who's a giant teddy that just wants hugs, and the prince of a neighbouring kingdom. Oh and they have to save the world from zombies.
I loved Talon, his snark and sass, his fierce intelligence and yet love and care for everyone around him. He's charismatic, charming, and a born leader (Although he'll never admit it or want it). His crew I equally liked - Jaimin is his perfect foil, willing to stand up to him and tell him when he's being an idiot, Coryn to protect him and give the best hugs, and Leicht and Sweetie to keep him in line. I honestly loved this whole thing and couldn't put it down.
