Goaltender Interference (Scoring Chances Series Book 1) by Brigham Vaughn

Goaltender Interference is book one in the Scoring Chances series by Brigham Vaughn. It is everything you want in a teammates to lovers, friends with benefits romance. Containing a single dad, a dash of bi-awakening, and a sprinkle of religious revelation, this book will make you smile, swoon, and feel way too fast for a book that's over 500 pages.

From the blurb:

The last thing Connor O’Shea needs is more complications …

After too much celebrating at his brother’s wedding, Connor wakes up next to cocky Toronto goaltender Jesse Webber—pro hockey’s reigning f*ckboy. With three kids and a failed marriage under his belt, Connor might be ready to admit he’s attracted to men, but that doesn’t mean his life has to change.

Fate has other plans: Jesse’s been traded to the Boston Harriers, the team Connor captains.

With an intimidating family legacy to live up to, pressure from ownership to bring home another Cup, and a strained relationship with his ex-wife to juggle, Connor reluctantly agrees to let Jesse stay at his place for the season—strictly to keep him in line.

Rules are set, boundaries are clear. But Jesse’s never met a rule he couldn’t break.

Between winning over Connor’s kids, rallying the team, and sneaking past Connor’s defenses, Jesse is determined to prove he’s more than just trouble.

But can he show Connor there’s more to life than playing it safe?

Angel's review:

I'll start off by saying I'm not too into any type of sports, I have little knowledge on any sport, so reading a book based around hockey I was worried I would get lost with the hockey rules and all the necessary information...I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't get lost. There was a lot of information about hockey as hockey was part of the plot, I mean both MC's are hockey players so of course it's going to be important, right? And while there was a lot of hockey talk and details, it all helped to making what was going on throughout the story feel real. I appreciate Brigham including the definitions of all the hockey terms in the beginning of the story, that really helped provide clarity on what certain terms meant when they were used throughout the book.

Now onto the romance! Connor and Jesse were... Undeniable. They had so much chemistry between them and throughout the story that chemistry and attraction just continued to grow and evolve. There is a lot of steamy scenes which makes sense seeing as how Connor and Jesse has a friends with benefits situation going on. However, while there were a lot of steamy scenes there were also really heartwarming scenes that occured between the MC's outside of the bedroom. I also really loved the moment where Nolan talks to Jesse about how he feels about Kyler, that scene was so cute and I just wanted to hug both Nolan and Jesse!

Jesse's character is full of life, he's exuberant, loud, sassy, fun, and is prone to chaos following him wherever he goes. In contrast, Connor is predictable, level headed, calm, and likes things to be in order. These two make such a great couple together, they contrast from each other but both help one another become better versions of themselves. For instance, Connor shows Jesse it's okay to have some order and that you can still have fun but on a smaller scale... Whereas Jesse helps show Connor that it's good to do things that are a little wild sometimes, it's good to let loose and have fun. I thought it was really great that these two men worked so well together, and the moment when they finally admitted their feelings to each other? That was so cute!! Jesse's interactions with Connor's kids was so adorable! You could tell how much he cares about them by his actions, I loved how he formed connections with all of them in his own way.

I really liked this book, the writing was great, the MC's were fantastic, and all of the side characters provided so much commentary and added an additional layer of depth to the story. All in all a fantastic book!! I really hope Nolan gets his own book in the future, I would love to read more about him.

SNik's review:

First in series (Scoring Chances). Teammates. Age gap. Grumpy/sunshine. Single dad. Secret hookup. Dual POV. Heed content warnings.

Connor’s first time with a man is great until he finds out Jesse will soon be his new teammate and goaltender for Connor’s professional hockey team. Jesse is a young playboy, adventurous, and a chaos attractor, opposite from the responsible team captain and single father that Connor is in every way, but their attraction is off the charts and neither of them is willing to ignore it.

Jesse pushes Connor for an extended friends with benefits relationship, and their steamy relationship slowly grows into something more as Connor struggles with his religious upbringing and whether a future with Jesse is possible. There are plenty of supportive secondary characters in their friends and family, and Connor and Jesse embrace their differences while accepting the happiness they have when together. I enjoyed Connor and Jesse overcoming several hurdles to be together, and they easily slipped into a sweet relationship that could go the distance.

Molly Otto's review:

Goaltender Interference is everything I want in a friends to benefits, teammates to lovers story. Connor is so lost and confused at first, having to reconcile his religion, newly explored bisexuality, the perils of co-parenting, and falling for his teammate. Poor guy has a lot going on. But Jesse, for as wild and out of control as everyone labels him, is actually really good for him. He's kind, caring, and sweet to Connor's kids, and he helps provide Connor the safe space he needs as he makes a lot of revelations and coming to terms in his life.

While the chemistry is off the charts, the more domestic, sweet, and caring moments are what really make this book shine.

Heather's Review:

I love when a hook-up ends up becoming a work relationship and the sparks keep flying - that's what happens in Goaltender Interference, the next book in the continuing NHL saga, and the first book in the new Scoring Chances series...

It feels like an opposites attract story, but as we get to know these two sweet men, we find out that they are more alike then they expect and that their goals for the future might just align beautifully...

I absolutely adore Jesse, the chaos demon, and how he connects with both Connor and his kids... I also love that while Connor struggles with his identity, once he commits, he makes it work.

I also love how so many of the beloved characters from previous series make appearances in this book - starting with a wedding :)  This book fits seamlessly into Brigham Vaughn's hockey universe and I can't wait to see who else will get their HEA this time!
