The Light Within is the thrilling conclusion to the Shadow & light duology from TJ Rose. After the events of book one Cinn & Julien learn to reestablish what was lost. This conclusion does not disappoint!
From the blurb:
Cinnamon ‘Cinn’ Saunders has learnt a lot since his arrival at the Aurelia Arcanum Institute of Esoteric Sciences.
He's learnt he’s a shadowslipper, capable of moving between realms.
He's learnt that he's expected to be the solution to the ever-growing waves of deadly umbraphage attacks.
He's learnt that cocky French men with pretty, punchable faces can be fun to kiss.
After Cinn's explosive arrival into his world, Julien Montaigne has also learnt a lot.
His dead sister Béatrice was a member of the terrorist group, the Arcane Purifiers;
Béatrice may or may not have returned to them as the world’s ugliest cat;
English men with a fondness for beanie hats make him go weak at the knees.
Trouble is stirring, and Cinn, Julien, Darcy and Elliot are about to be caught in the cross-fire between the consortium and the Arcane Purifiers. As dangers circle like sharks, the four friends must unravel the threads of the mysteries they’re wrapped up in and choose which side of the war they belong to before their enemies close in.
This is the second half of the Shadow & Light Duology, and should be read after The Shadows Beyond.
Molly Otto's review:
The second half of the Shadow & Light duet takes us deeper into the shadowlands and what needs to be done to restore peace. Julien & Cinn have much to talk about and work through from the past events and in time they do. Julien is still Julien and has issues talking and letting Cinn fully in, but in those moments, he does its magic. So many secrets are uncovered that have haunted Julien & Cinn for so long, leaving both men both more shattered yet healed at the same time. This book takes a promising beginning to new heights with that right balance of action/intrigue/comedy and romance. Overall, it is a well-balanced book that gives you all the answers you sought from book one.
SNik's review:
Second in duet (Shadow and Light Duology), must be read in order. Paranormal urban fantasy. Established couple. Hurt/comfort. Found family. Dual POV (with some alternate POV’s). Heed content warnings.
Picking up immediately after the events of the first book, Cinn and Julien are solidly working on their relationship while still investigating Beatrice’s death and the shadowy Arcane Purifier group. This conclusion included more steamy interactions between Cinn and Julien and plenty of declarations as the two become closer which really brought the romance more into play than the previous book. Also, their found family continues to support them and with the help of the shadow cat they find their way to more answers and allies.
I enjoyed this duet’s world building, characters, romance, and action filled storyline. I was so invested in these characters that I would have loved a longer epilogue showing where everyone is with their lives even farther down the road, but overall a truly entertaining duology.
