Death Song (Tales from the Tarot) by B. Ripley

Haunted and possibly going mad, Charlie has been painting the same man and his life over and over. Then one day he meets Rex and finds that his mystery man is real and they may be tied together in a supernatural way that both men find they are willing to embrace.

From the Death Song blurb:

CHARLIE

Art is my livelihood, but the things I paint in the dead of night might just kill me.

Night after night, I am pulled from my sleep and compelled by some unseen force to paint the face of the man who haunts my dreams. I cannot resist the urge to capture his life on canvas, and the song of grief and mourning that he sings is forever stuck in my head. I don't know who he is, but meeting him face to face feels like fate.

Rex. I finally have a name. If I can keep it together long enough to finish the commission he hires me for, I might be able to earn the rest I desire - and learn the truth of who I am and why my dreams of Rex include the pierce of fangs and a throne from the distant past.

Death Song is a standalone MM paranormal romance novel as part of the multi-author collaboration Tales from the Tarot. This book is based on the major arcana card Death.

SNik's review:

Part of a multi-author series (Tales from the Tarot), but can be read as a standalone. Paranormal. Slow burn. Dual POV. Heed content warnings.

Dreaming of a man and being forced to paint him almost every night is slowly driving artist Charlie to exhaustion and madness. When he finds that he is seeing Rex’s past and the vampire is very much real and alive, Charlie finds they are drawn to each other in inexplicable ways. I appreciated the ease in which Charlie accepts the supernatural aspects of the community around him, as well as the ease in which he and Rex fall into their relationship together.

There are a few twists and turns when Charlie and Rex are trying to reach their HEA, some were predictable others didn’t seem as necessary but still leant to an entertaining read overall. The supportive secondary characters introduced were interesting and fun, and I believe that the author intends to further many of their stories (I hope!). Charlie and Rex really felt fated and this was an emotional and sweet read.

Angel's review:

This book is spectacular! I wasn't expecting such a intricately crafted world full of a variety of different paranormal creatures. I thought that perhaps it would be about Charlie being a reincarnation of Marius, and about Rex being a vampire, but there is so much more to this than just that.

Throughout the majority of this story, Charlie is a mystery, he believes himself to be human but he keeps having dreams of this man he's never met before. Then when he does meet the man in his dreams, his eyes are opened to a whole new world that he was never aware of. And even then, he's still a mystery. The vampires suspect he's a reincarnation of Marius but the wolves think differently. I loved how there was this big mystery surrounding Charlie and how even as the story progressed it was still a surprise when what Charlie is was revealed. I loved that this author kept it a surprise, and wrote about different possibilities of who, or what he could be. That aspect was handled extremely well!

The characters themselves were fantastic. Charlie and Rex were so vibrant on the page, their personalities just shone through. They were different from each other but fit so well together. I adored how their relationship developed, not too slow, but not too fast either. While Charlie has similarities to Marius, Rex took the time to get to know the real Charlie, which I really enjoyed.

The side characters were great as well. Emery, Gibson, Finn, and Bowman were all fantastic. Them along with Rex and Charlie make up a terrific cast of characters. I enjoyed how the side characters are so prevalent throughout the story, they aren't casted off to the side, or forgotten about. They are front and center the whole time and I enjoyed that a lot.

I also liked how much world building was going on, and all the details that went into describing not only the scenery, but of each painting as well. I thought the writing of this story was exceptional!

I'm so happy Finn is getting his own story and I am so excited to read about what his story entails.
