Grab your snacks for Secondhand Skin by Hailey Turner as Wade and his bottomless stomach take you on an adventure to Boston. Fun, action-packed, and full of food, this is a heart-stopping sweet read perfect for our lovable dragon. Wade's HEA is finally here!
From the blurb:
Nothing says you can’t steal a heart. Keeping it though? That’s another problem.
Wade Espinoza knows a thing or two about hoards. As a dragon, he’s got plenty. What he doesn’t have is a relationship, and he swears he’s not looking for one. But when he’s sent to Boston to answer a cry for help from another pack, he’s drawn into a mess of fae bargains centered around a selkie who Wade instantly becomes obsessed with.
Riordan Maguire is struggling to keep his selkie clan out of the clutches of a fae lord who will do anything to take over their territory. Partnering with the Boston god pack means coming face-to-face with the first person he’s ever wanted to willingly give his sealskin. Too bad Wade isn’t local and is something altogether strange that Riordan isn’t sure he can trust.
Amidst a growing danger in the streets and Boston Harbor, Wade and Riordan are desperate to find a way to keep everyone safe. For bargains are dangerous things to break, but so are hearts. Wade isn’t willing to shatter either of theirs in a race against time that could see Riordan torn from him forever.
Secondhand Skin is an exciting new standalone novel set in Hailey Turner's best-selling Soulbound Universe focusing on Wade Espinoza.
Molly Otto's review:
This is not a drill it's time for Wades story at last! Be prepared and have snacks on hand, or you will have to pull me and buy some to continue on or just become hungrier.
Wade is called to help in Boston, where he meets their head supes, including Riordan Maguire, a selkie who he's drawn to like no other. In this fun story, we get to revisit past events with Wade nonchalant way of talking about how he knows what he does. The Maguire family is awesome. They are gonna fit well without our beloved god pack. Once they behave, that is. Like the rest of Haileys Soulbound universe be prepared for non-stop action with twists and turns coming from every direction.
SNik's review:
Standalone but set in the author’s Soulbound Universe, so it might be more fun if read after that series. Paranormal. Found family. Dual POV.
The New York god pack is busy as usual even years after the world ending Battle of Samhain, and it’s Wade’s turn to be sent out of town when the Boston god pack asks for help. A prior run in with Riordan, clan leader of the Boston selkies sparked an attraction, and now Wade and Riordan must work together to fight a devious fae from his attempt to take over all of Boston.
This was a much anticipated story as Wade is a fan favorite from Turner’s Soulbound Universe, and he has come into his own, having learned from his pack he has matured, is intelligent, thoughtful, confident, and dedicated to help, and still wanting to eat all of the snacks within reach. Riordan is a nice complement to Wade in his patience, caring, and easy acceptance of everything Wade is, even before he finds out Wade is a powerful dragon that can take on gods. Plenty of action, found family, new baddies and allies, and a sweet romance. The only thing that would have made this better is more time together, more story about Boston, more everything, but I happily devoured this book and its new and old characters. Honestly, I’m sad I can’t read it for the first time again.
Jacqueleen the Reading Queen's review:
"ᴡᴀᴅᴇ ᴏꜰᴛᴇɴ ᴛʜᴏᴜɢʜᴛ ɴᴇᴡ ʏᴏʀᴋ ᴄɪᴛʏ ᴅʀɪᴠᴇʀꜱ ᴡᴇʀᴇ ᴛʜᴇ ᴡᴏʀꜱᴛ, ʙᴜᴛ ᴄʟᴇᴀʀʟʏ, ᴛʜᴇʏ ʜᴀᴅ ɴᴏᴛʜɪɴɢ ᴏɴ ᴍᴀꜱꜱᴀᴄʜᴜꜱᴇᴛᴛꜱ ᴅʀɪᴠᴇʀꜱ."
Words cannot express how delighted I was when Hailey Turner announced she was writing in the Soulbound Universe again and that this book would star Wade. I'm sure she has been inundated with numerous DMs and messages begging for his story for years. Even better for me is the fact that this book takes place in Boston, the place in which I have resided in or near my entire life. I absolutely agree with Wade on Massachusetts drivers (that's why they call us Massholes) and I also agree with Riordan that Modern pastry FAR outweighs Mikes. In case you were wondering their pistachio cannoli is my favorite ;).
Wade was just one of those side characters that you just cannot help but fall in love with. Despite his horribly tragic backstory, he persevered and slowly began to find himself with the help of his newfound family. Getting the full story of what happened to him while he was enslaved by a god brought tears to my eyes and made me even more grateful for the fact that he had Patrick, Jono, and the whole gang in his life.
"ᴛʜᴇʏ ᴡᴇʀᴇ ᴡʜᴀᴛ ᴡᴀᴅᴇ ᴄᴏɴꜱɪᴅᴇʀᴇᴅ ʜᴏᴍᴇ ᴛʜᴏᴜɢʜ, ᴀ ᴄᴀʟᴍɪɴɢ ᴘʀᴇꜱᴇɴᴄᴇ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ʜᴀᴅ ᴀʟᴡᴀʏꜱ ꜱᴛɪʟʟᴇᴅ ᴛʜᴇ ᴄʜᴜʀɴɪɴɢ ɪɴ ʜɪꜱ ɢᴜᴛ ᴀɴᴅ ᴘᴀɴɪᴄ ɪɴ ʜɪꜱ ᴍɪɴᴅ ᴏɴᴄᴇ ʜᴇ'ᴅ ꜰɪɴᴀʟʟʏ ʀᴇᴀʟɪᴢᴇᴅ ᴛʜᴇʏ ᴍᴇᴀɴᴛ ɪᴛ ᴡʜᴇɴ ᴛʜᴇʏ ᴘʀᴏᴍɪꜱᴇᴅ ᴛʜᴇʏ ᴡᴏᴜʟᴅɴ'ᴛ ʟᴇᴛ ᴀɴʏᴏɴᴇ ʜᴜʀᴛ ʜɪᴍ."
Following Wade on his journey to provide help in Boston was very humorous. I loved how he would assess a situation and then decide which person in his pack he needed to channel for the moment. A Patrick approach vs a Sage approach were very different indeed. Not to mention the fact that Wade basically spends half the book eating his way through the city. He's still a growing fledgling after all.
It made me happy to see that the man meant for Wade was just as kind and caring as he was. Riordan was so patient and understanding with Wade. Their romantic moments were extremely sweet and always made me smile. After everything Wade had already endured in his short life, he deserved nothing but blissful happiness, and I am so glad he gets to enjoy it with Riordan.
