This is such an angsty enemies to lovers story full of snarky banter, and a lot of animals!
From the Cat's Got Your Heart blurb:
Who knew two men could form such a bitter rivalry over adopting a cat?
Jericho Adams is in need of a cat. Doesn’t sound too difficult, even for a reclusive artist like him. People adopt cats all the time. Those people clearly never met Harlan Vardanyan, the world’s surliest pet shop employee.
Harlan’s love for animals is matched only by his disdain for customers. Too much experience tells him they can’t be trusted. When Jericho sets his sights on Dumpling, an aloof-but-lovely young cat, Harlan vows the man will never have her. However, he can’t outright refuse without risking his job.
What he can do is fabricate a series of absurd adoption requirements that Jericho can’t possibly meet. Unfortunately for Harlan, the more his demands escalate, the more determined Jericho becomes to free Dumpling from her short, fire-breathing gatekeeper. Then Harlan is unexpectedly evicted from his apartment, and Jericho ends up rescuing him instead.
Now Jericho and Harlan are forced to continue their battle of wills in tight quarters. Except living together unveils vulnerability on both sides, and soon trading verbal jabs begins to feel… wrong. The weeks-long rivalry sputters, and in its place, a fragile intimacy begins to grow.
But the secret deadline for Jericho’s cat acquisition is rapidly approaching. He can’t let his feelings for Harlan get in the way of his ultimate goal, even if the betrayal will destroy whatever they’ve been building.
***
“Cat's Got Your Heart” is a 70,000-words-long slow burn, low heat M/M romance between a transgender man and a cisgender man. It features animals with ridiculous names, childhood trauma, and more hijinks than necessary. This is a re-release of an earlier work with changes made to character demographics. It is otherwise the same story.
Angel's review:
High Angst
Enemies to lovers
Low Steam (Which I adore!!)
Animal lover
Adorable and sassy felines.
When Jem announced the blurb for this book, and showed the cover I was immediately intrigued. When they asked if I would be interested in reading it, I immediately said yes! I'm so glad I did, and that I was able to read this magnificent book.
Harlan and Jericho are our two MC's who admittedly start out despising one another. Now in the beginning it seems a bit odd that Harlan despises Jericho so much, but as the story progresses we learn why Harlan is so protective and defensive in regards to the animals he cares for.
The back and forth angsty remarks kept me on the edge of my seat and made me eager to read more. I needed to know what their breaking point would be, and what the catalyst would have to be in order for that to happen. The buildup was handled immaculately! I was kept invested the whole time, from beginning to end. I had no interest in much else other than finding out what was going to happen between Harlan and Jericho, and of course I can't forget about sweet Dumpling.
What I loved the most is the acceptance that flows throughout this story, especially when Jericho and Harlan are in bed together and Harlan pulls out his packer.. it was a non-issue that Jericho accepted so beautifully, I loved that! While I loved both of these MC's, I have a soft spot for Jericho. As someone who constantly over thinks everything and thrives off of clarification, I saw a lot of myself in his character. I completely understand what led Jericho to believe his sister no longer wanted to talk to him. I appreciated how there was some conflict that arose in the story and that it got discussed and solved before the story was over.
All in all a terrific story!!
