Humility (Damned Connections Book 4) by Lark Taylor

Humility might be the end of the Damned Connections series, but there's a new series that's about to unfold.

From the blurb:

Two commitment-phobes. One ridiculous plan. A decision that changes everything…

Riley

If a no-strings hookup is required, then I’m the perfect guy.

When I meet Danny, I can’t believe my luck. A sexy wolf shifter who’s also a fireman? Who runs from relationships just as fast as I do? Sign me up.

The night that follows is one for the history books, and the best part? Neither of us is looking for a repeat.

That doesn’t mean we don’t see each other again. Without even realising it, we become friends. Friends who do everything together.

Everything with Danny is perfect, but when I start to yearn for more from my hookups, I know something needs to change.

So I come up with a plan. A genius plan. I sign up for an app that arranges anonymous encounters. No names. No faces shown.

No danger of pesky feelings getting involved.

What could possibly go wrong?

Danny

Unlike Riley, my desire to avoid a relationship has nothing to do with commitment issues.

Taking a mate would mean returning to the clan who betrayed me. I’d have to leave behind this life I’ve built, a life I’m very happy with. One where Riley occupies most of my free time.

Everything is going swimmingly until Riley tells me his plan. His genius plan, he calls it. He can’t see it for what it is—an idiotic idea that’ll land him in danger.

I can’t let him go through with it. My wolf won’t allow it. Problem is, Riley’s as stubborn as they come. Once he’s decided on something, there’s no changing his mind.

Not wanting him in danger, I realise there’s only one thing I can do. One thing that’ll keep Riley happy while also keeping him safe.

I can be his anonymous hookup.

It’s idiot-proof. At least, it would be, if I wasn’t an idiot.

Turns out Riley isn’t the only one who should be scared of hooking up and realising you want more.

Humilityis the thrilling fourth instalment in the Damned Connections series and can be read as a standalone. Featuring a wolf shifter x human pairing, this spicy MM PNR romance will make you laugh and cry. Each book follows a different couple with a guaranteed HEA.

Angel's review:

I, like others, have been wanting Danny's story for a while now. This did not disappoint, it was full of angst that Lark's known for, as well as it having steamy scenes, plenty of growling, and a heartbreaking past.

In the previous books whenever Danny's character was mentioned there was always mystery surrounding him, no one fully knew about his past or why he had someone's name tattooed on his body, or who the name belonged to. Until now.

Riley and Danny's relationship is so amazing, they have such comedic banter with each other. Riley gives Danny so much sass, and Danny tries to be sneaky and find ways to give Riley the things he wants and needs without being obvious about him helping. I thought their relationship was written spectacularly! They start off having a one-night-stand and after that night they become close friends. Throughout the years of their friendship they are each other's wingmen, but when Riley comes up with a reckless idea Danny takes matters into his own hands...

I love the friends to lovers trope and Lark did such an amazing job with it in this story, you can really feel the friendship that Danny and Riley have come across the page so profoundly. Learning about Danny's past was absolutely heartbreaking, he's suffered so much and has had so much loss. After learning about all he has gone through, and what he has to lose if he takes a mate, I completely understand why he stuck with hookups.

This book as I mentioned above is full of angst, these two circle around each other for years, and even after that point these two still took a while realizing their true feelings for one another. I liked how their relationship was drawn out and how these two men took their time, Danny was so patient and kind towards Riley even while he was coming to terms with his feelings, he was so sweet. I found the pacing to flow nicely, the dialogue between all the characters was really engaging, the action scenes were heavily detailed and excellently done, and I loved getting introduced to new characters.

I truly hope Logan gets his own story, I feel like his book will be a very... Interesting tale. I very much enjoyed this book, and while I'm sad to see this series end, I'm really excited for what's next! Or rather, who's next.

Jacqueleen the Reading Queen's review:

"ʜᴇ ʟᴏᴏᴋᴇᴅ ʟɪᴋᴇ ʜᴇ ᴡᴀɴᴛᴇᴅ ᴛᴏ ᴇᴀᴛ ᴍᴇ ᴀʟɪᴠᴇ. ʟɪᴋᴇ ꜱᴇᴇɪɴɢ ᴍᴇ ᴡɪᴛʜ ᴀɴᴏᴛʜᴇʀ ᴍᴀɴ ʜᴀᴅ ꜰɪɴᴀʟʟʏ ᴀᴡᴏᴋᴇɴ ꜱᴏᴍᴇᴛʜɪɴɢ ɪɴ ʜɪᴍ. ɴᴏᴛ ɴᴇᴄᴇꜱꜱᴀʀɪʟʏ ꜱᴏᴍᴇᴛʜɪɴɢ ʜᴇᴀʟᴛʜʏ, ʙᴜᴛ ɪ ᴅɪᴅɴ'ᴛ ɢɪᴠᴇ ᴀ ꜰᴜᴄᴋ."

Whoa boy was this book H-O-T!! I should have expected it since the MCs of the book are the known manwhores of the group. Humility begins back when Riley and Danny first meet at Matty's birthday party. We finally get to see what happens later that night and as I already said, it was HOT. These two have chemistry like you wouldn't believe, but true to their word, they both hold firm on their one night only rule. They just become best friends instead.

I loved how cute these two were. Their relationship was the definition of codependent. If they weren't at work or hooking up, Riley and Danny would be in each other's orbit. They were basically a married couple just without all the sex. Everyone knew it. Everyone but them. Both were content having each other as their person. And it worked for them. It worked for a long time...until it didn't.

"ᴍʏ ᴡᴏʟꜰ ʜᴀᴅ ᴄʟᴀɪᴍᴇᴅ ʜɪᴍ ᴀꜱ ᴍɪɴᴇ... ᴇᴠᴇɴ ɪꜰ ɴᴇɪᴛʜᴇʀ ᴏꜰ ᴜꜱ ᴡᴀɴᴛᴇᴅ ᴛʜᴀᴛ."

A lot of things in this book broke my heart. Danny's past. Riley's reason for not wanting a relationship. Danny's reasons too actually. I hated anything that got in the way of them being together. I was even mad at Riley for a while being the stubborn shit he was. A lot had to happen for our MCs to get their HEA. Broken hearts. A traumatic event. Danny's old pack needing to be dealt with, though I really enjoyed the visit and meeting the future MCs of Lark's shifter series. Fingers crossed for a book for Logan! Don't worry though. In the end Danny and Riley get the true HEA they absolutely earned, and I don't think they could have been any happier.
