Monsters within Men: An MM Post-Apocalyptic Romance by TJ Rose

"I don't typically read zombie dystopian books, but add in romance and I'm there!" Angel read Monsters within Men.

From the blurb:

London, 2053. One of the last remaining civilisations in the world.

A decade on from the first wave of human-flesh-craving monsters that wiped out most of society, Noah
finds himself stepping up to lead Squad E, part of London’s East Regiment, fighting back against the creatures that threaten mankind. But between battling monsters, struggling with grief, and his rivalry with another lieutenant, Noah is sinking, fast. The last thing he needs is a young, weak conscript with an attitude problem to add to his issues. Especially when he can’t seem to get him out of his head.

Zeke, Squad E’s newest recruit, would rather do anything else than be conscripted into the dwindling military force battling to save humanity. But when his research assistant job abruptly ends after his boss is arrested under mysterious circumstances, he must learn to embrace his new life as a soldier. But perhaps his attractive commanding officer—whom he is forbidden from dating—might offer the silver lining he never knew he wanted?

As the crisis escalates, London’s time begins to run out. Food shortages, riots, and secrets buried by leadership all push the city towards its boiling point. The ten members of Squad E, along with their faithful dog, Wolf, must band together if they’re going to make it out of this alive.

Monsters within Men is a slow burn, post-apocalyptic fantasy MM romance, suitable for adult readers. It is a standalone book of around 110k words.

Content warnings: explicit sexual scenes, grief, self-harm, non-graphically described suicide attempts, on-page death of side characters, mild gore

Angel's Review:

As my headline suggests, I don't typically read books with zombies in them, they aren't my forte. When I read the blurb for this book, I was intrigued. A dystopian world with zombies, while also have a romance plot? Sign me up! I didn't know how this book would be or if I would like it. However, upon reading this, I quickly discovered how truly remarkable this book is!!

I've never read anything by TJ Rose. After reading this book, I definitely am going to be keeping my eye out for their releases. I was immediately drawn into this world and was captivated by these characters instantaneously. When I was reading it, it was like I was watching a movie. The level of detail that was in this book made everything feel realistic, and just sucked you further into the story and this collapsing world.

I was truly invested into these characters, not just the MC's, but the incredible side characters as well. This story almost made me cry several times, due to how terrific the characters are, and how some of them lost their lives. It was just so sad! And also so realistic, it was breathtaking while simultaneously terrifying to read.

I really liked how Noah and Zeke's relationship slowly formed and developed. They let their want for each other simmer, and they tried to fight, but inevitably decided to not fight their feelings any longer. That was done really well. Honestly, the whole book was written really well, it was so believable too. I never wanted this book to end. I was cheering on these characters and kept holding my breath hoping no more of them died.

The blindside that occurred in this book was done so well!! I had no idea that was going to happen. It was a complete surprise!

One thing I'm going to bite is, as far as I'm aware, this is a standalone? Yet throughout the book it kept mentioning something more taking place, and at the end, when they were all heading to a different destination, we didn't really get any clarity on what was going on with Zeke. (Once you read this yourself, what I'm saying might make more sense.)

Overall, though, a really incredible book! I truly hope TJ writes another book in this series, with these characters, so I can see what happens next!
