A Mage's Guide to Wicky, R'iyah Family Archives #3 by A.J. Sherwood

A Mage's Guide to Wicky is the 3rd in the R'iyah family archives series, not a standalone, more a spinoff.  Wicky and Sun's story.

From the blurb:

Wicky’s never been magically stalked before.

He kinda likes it, to be honest.

For some reason, it’s upsetting everyone else though. Maybe he should figure out who it is?

Ooooo, maybe his fated one is on the other end! In…Thailand?

Wicky use your brain challenge: Failed, author has lost discretion in this, Wicky is in Thailand, pray for Thailand, the trio is along for the ride, fated mates, Thai magic, don’t mind the author I’m just over here building a ship, Sun is the younger of the two but he’s also resigned to being the responsible one, chosen family, Mobius talks, in Thai, Wicky feels so betrayed, look this is pure romantic crack, Sun is cute that’s all you need to know

Sheena's Review:

I love the trio from the first two books, but Wicky has been such a great side character, I wasn't surprised at all when I discovered he'd get his own story.  Wicky is such a ball of chaos, I was prepared for just about anything when I started this.  I did not expect his story to be as sweet as it is.

Wicky being magically stalked is just about right for him, I think.  Wicky doesn't do anything by half, so why should finding his soulmate and other half be anything different.  Sun is such a sweet person, single minded in his determination to follow through on the vision that was revealed to him, and I get that.  I get his determination to leave his overpowering family - although they love him - and strike out on his own and find his path in life.  That it leads to Wicky is more of a surprise to Wicky than anyone else 😂

I honestly expected a little more shenanigans, because this is Wicky and Nico is also involved but that's relatively toned down in favor of the sweet story between Wicky and Sun.  I really enjoyed this entry in the series, and can't wait for the next case.

Jacquie's Review:

Being that it is Wicky, I expected more shenanigans. However, I appreciated A Mage's Guide to Wicky as being a sweet novella and the introduction of Sun. In all honesty, it was probably better that it was toned down as it introduces Sun so nicely and a new branch of magic.

I mean, it's still Wicky, so there is still some action. It wouldn't be the same series without it. There's a great scene where the trio and Wicky meet Sun's family that is just fantastic. Wicky can't resist the urge to show off.

Mobius was so fun! The familiar really took on a personality, and that was a highlight for me. Mobius talking, and in Thai, was just hilarious.

Just makes me want more of the series and I can't wait to see Sun working with the team and ganging up with Zia against Wicky and Nico.

Nicole's Review:

Wicky’s novella was everything I wanted minus 100 pages!!! Sun is going to be a great addition to the team. I really liked AJ’s take on the string of fate in Asian culture. The insight into Wicky’s thoughts was so fun. I hope we get more of these two!

Dez's Review:

I absolutely adore Wicky! He’s so crazy it should be illegal to be that cute! He should also come with his own warning labels! Or not. I love his recklessness as well as his try as he might serious tones as well.

Sun is such a wholesome cutie as well! Don’t get him wrong though, he’s got just enough sass to keep Wicky in check! Although I don’t know if he knows just how many heart attacks Wicky is going to give him!

AJ Sherwood has spun out a short yet sweet story of our beloved crazy mage getting his own happiness even if he wasn’t exactly looking for it.
