Deep Focus: A MM Romantic Mystery (Hollywood Endings #4) by J.D. Sampson

Strong emotional up and downs throughout the whole story in Deep Focus. It starts out intensely with an online streaming kidnapping and leads to the main characters reevaluating their relationship.

From the blurb:

On a sunny Sunday afternoon, thousands of people log on to a new social media app to watch as a popular teen influencer live-streams her own abduction.

FBI Agent Bodhi Locke and TV star boyfriend Morgan Cooper Young, track the kidnapper to a motel in Los Angeles and it’s a quick end to a tense situation. But instead of being praised for his heroics, Bodhi is put on blast when he expresses his concerns about the influence the streaming app has over its young users.

As Bodhi pushes to have the app shut down, the fans use the tremendous power of the internet to start a terror campaign that rips through every aspect of Bodhi’s life. Used to living life under a microscope, Bodhi’s TV star boyfriend Morgan Cooper Young tries to help Bodhi cope, but the case only intensifies Bodhi’s concerns about their upcoming nuptials and life as the husband of a Hollywood celebrity.

Will the harsh light of online fame tear the boys apart?

Sticks and stones may break your bones, but the internet can seriously hurt you.

Reedkaye's Review:

This is the first book I’ve read in the series and while I’m planning on reading the rest, this story can be read as a standalone.

Deep Focus is one of those stories that gives me a book hangover. You keep thinking about long after you finish the story. I’m hoping there will be more with these characters.

The story really has a strong start right away. An FBI agent gets pulled into what appears as a kidnapping and the whole thing is being streamed online. Bodhi gets involved even though it isn’t his jurisdiction, but time plays into it. Morgan also gets involved because he is right there with Bodhi.

After the immediate danger is handled, they find out this is only the start of the trouble they have since being involved with the online showing. This also brings up the issue of Bodhi not completely being comfortable in a gay relationship but also Morgan’s acting career places more public focus on their relationship and Bodhi does not like the attention.

As situations cause Bodhi to examine his daily life, he feels he can’t continue in the limelight. Then something happens that gives both guys to come to decisions what is most important to them.

This is a strongly emotional story. It took me through many up and downs of their lives and careers. The characters and issues are described so well that I could easily picture this really happening.

This story convinced me to check out more from this author and watch for further stories, hopefully with these characters.

Janet's Review:

Deep Focus is the fourth book in the Hollywood Ending series. I’ve loved every single book in this series, but this one hung with me. The plot felt realistic, like I was there watching it all unfold.

Bodhi has a need to stay out of the limelight. His fiancee Morgan is an A-list star. An influencer has streamed her own kidnapping, and all ends well, but it hits Bodhi. He wants the app shut down.

Twists and turns all around. Overall, an excellent story! Well written with fantastic pacing.
