Cair (Veiled City #1) by Eryn Hawk

What happens when you find your fated mate right before you will be leaving forever? A fae prince and his lovable mate fight the pull of attraction in Cair, the start of a series by new author Eryn Hawk.

From the blurb:

Twenty-five-year-old Luca Elliot lives in a city divided. The humans and the supernaturals mostly keep to their own kind, but Luca—curious and desperate for work—crosses the border and finds himself employed by a tall, stupidly handsome Fae with killer horns. He should be intimidated, but instead, Luca is utterly captivated. Falling for the boss is a bad idea though, right?
Cair Haryk is only a visitor to the human world and, between his position in the Fae kingdom and a bargain he made years ago, he can never remain. He's content with that until he meets Luca—his soulmate—and hires him to work in his high-end lounge. Cair tries to guard his heart, but fate has other plans and, despite his best intentions, he falls for the pretty little human. Hard. Luca can't enter the Fae realm, and Cair’s time in the mortal lands is drawing to an end, so while the attraction between them is irresistible, their situation is impossible. They can't be together. It’s tragedy and heartbreak just waiting to happen. Isn’t it? CAIR is a MM paranormal romance with spice, size difference, and soulmates. It features a lovable human trying to find his place in the supernatural world, and a secretive Fae who's not as detached as he pretends to be. This is the first book in the Veiled City series. If you want to know more about this story's tropes, kinks and warnings, visit my Instagram (authorerynhawk) for a full content list.

Jacqueleen the Reading Queen's Review:

I just love it when taking a chance on a new author pays off and the first book in the Veiled City series by Eryn Hawk did that in spades. It had everything I enjoy in a good paranormal romance. Intriguing word-building, a slow-ish burn giving way to plenty of possessive kindle melting steam, and a bit of sarcasm to top it all off. Bonus points for fated mates because that is total trope kryptonite for me. I loved how the stoic and cold Cair would utterly melt when his attention was on Luca. That's not to say he became a total pushover for his soulmate. Cair made it perfectly clear that he even when it didn't appear so, he was still the one in charge. His possessiveness and the savage way he took Luca apart piece by piece was just delicious. It broke my heart knowing that Cair was on borrowed time and would eventually have to say goodbye to the human he had fallen for. "You deserve a better life than I can offer." Luca may be a weak human compared to the supernaturals surrounding him at his new job at Cair's bar, but he made up for it in personality and determination. He was sweet, and it didn't take him long to charm everyone around him. Even Teighan, Cair's permascowly brother, couldn't resist liking Luca, although he took longer than most to warm up. The romantic angst factor wasn't zero, but the book had a mild amount if I had to put a quantifier. It was much more focused on the swoon and dirty deeds which you will not hear me complain about one iota. I was so happy how everything turned out in the end for the couple. "I felt like I was home." Honorary mention goes to Luca's bestie Alex. He's a man after my own heart, with his total lack of filter and cocky attitude. We get a sneak peek of book 2, which will be about Alex and Teighan and is already up on the Zon for pre-order. Boy, that grouchy fae is gonna have his hands full when it comes to Alex. There were also some hints layered in Cair which have me convinced Teighan might just be a Daddy, and I don't mean the kind who has kids 😉. I can't wait to find out if I'm right!

SNik's Review:

First in series (Veiled City). Paranormal. Slow burn. Fated mates. Dual POV.

Even though he has been warned his whole life to stay away, Luca needs work, work, so he crosses the barrier to the other side of the city where fae and monsters are commonplace and luckily gets hired at an upscale lounge. But it’s not really luck because Luca is the fated mate of the owner Cair, but humans don’t know about fated mates, nor that Cair is the prince of the fae world.

The story focuses primarily on the fact that Cair has only a limited time left before he has to return to the fae realm and he refuses to bond with Luca,Luca, knowing he will have to leave him behind. There is some world building as an introduction to the series, interesting secondary characters, and likable main characters that can’t fight the pull of their mate.

I do wish we spent more time with Cair and Luca interacting, but when they did, did, it was steamy and sweet. A fun read for a debut author and series.

Cair and Luca were wonderfully written characters and totally HOT together…🔥 I really liked this author's ability to create a debut that flowed effortlessly. It’s everything you want from a fantasy read and an awesome start to the Veiled City series. So looking forward to Teighan and Alex’s story.

Janet's Review:

Cair is the first book in the Veiled City series and I can’t wait to read more in the world! I’m a sucker for urban fantasy/paranormal and this one hit all my buttons.

Cair is the Prince of the Fae and must return after a hundred years. Luca is a human that cannot travel and live in the Fae real but he also is Cair’s soulmate.

The world building and complex character dynamics were fantastic, the story line excellent. Well written with great pacing! Overall, fantastic read, loved it!
