Kinked Up (It's a Kink Thing #1) by M.C. Roth

Kinked Up was one of the most requested titles we've had recently. See what the team had to say below.

From the blurb:

Can Trick choose between the love of his life and the sub of his dreams?

Nav can’t count the number of times he has wished he could close his eyes, hand over the reins and let someone take care of him. It’s a dream that none of his exes have been able to fulfill—not that he really understands what he needs.

At least, he doesn’t until he stumbles into a dark alley to get away from the bustling noise on the dance floor where he doesn’t belong. He’s not alone in the alley, and the stranger who gives him everything he’s longing for isn’t a stranger at all but Trick, his gorgeous neighbor who has a body that models would kill for and the softest blue eyes that Nav has ever seen.

Trick has everything he could ever wish for, including his kinky fiancé, Theo, who has been by his side for ten years. So when Trick sets up an intense scene in an alleyway that pushes their boundaries beyond anything he could have imagined, his life seems perfect. But when the alley lights flicker on, he discovers the man against him isn’t his fiancé at all.

One perfect mistake will change their lives forever.

Reader advisory: This book contains pain play and consensual non-consent.

Jacquie's Review:

Dark, gritty, zero fluff and some triggers so it won't be for everyone, but I loved it.

CW consensual non consent. Pain play. Degradation. Cheating (though accidental initially.)

As someone else said, the first scene that Trick and Nav do in the alley will live in my head rent free. Wow, that was something else and it set the tone for the rest of the book. Really, I read this book a few weeks ago and I still remember it all!

There's a lot of kink involved but written largely with limits set, it also shows what happens when they aren't. I loved the set up on the kink club and how they monitored their own people.

I don't think I have words for how much I enjoyed this and I can't wait for Derreck's book!

Tatted_book_freak's Review:

Now this is how you start a story!!! Trick and Nav’s initial encounter will forever be engraved in my mind! The explosive experience, the insane chemistry, and the fight for perfection was absolutely perfect!

ɴᴀᴠ ʜᴀᴅ ɴᴇᴠᴇʀ ʙᴇᴇɴ ᴛʀᴜʟʏ ᴄᴏɴᴛᴇɴᴛ ʙᴇꜰᴏʀᴇ, ʙᴜᴛ ꜰᴏʀ ᴛʜᴇ ꜰɪʀꜱᴛ ᴛɪᴍᴇ ʜᴇ ᴄᴏᴜʟᴅ ꜱᴇᴇ ʜɪᴍꜱᴇʟꜰ ꜱᴛᴀʏɪɴɢ—ꜱᴇᴇ ʜɪᴍꜱᴇʟꜰ ᴡɪᴛʜ ᴛʀɪᴄᴋ ꜰᴏʀ ᴍᴏʀᴇ ᴛʜᴀɴ ᴊᴜꜱᴛ ᴀ ꜱᴇʀɪᴇꜱ ᴏꜰ ᴋɪɴᴋʏ ꜰᴜᴄᴋꜱ ᴀɴᴅ ᴀᴡᴋᴡᴀʀᴅ ᴀᴠᴏɪᴅᴀɴᴄᴇꜱ. ɪᴛ ꜱʜᴏᴜʟᴅ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ʙᴇᴇɴ ꜱᴄᴀʀʏ, ʙᴜᴛ ʜᴇ ᴄᴏᴜʟᴅɴ’ᴛ ʙʀɪɴɢ ʜɪᴍꜱᴇʟꜰ ᴛᴏ ᴄᴀʀᴇ.

Nav’s history of failed relationships was a perfect setup for Trick. The need for a that connection with a D/s relationship was just what was needed his entire life, getting exactly what was needed from the moment Trick mistakenly came.

“𝙔𝙤𝙪’𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙨𝙪𝙗, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙙𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙞𝙩.”

The intensity of their connection was what made this story so interesting. The D/s relationship was written with the upmost care, nailing the nail right in with the exact level of care needed when writing this genre. Even when their communication faltered a little, the club Dom stepped in as needed. The “drop” of a Dom is always possible, the aftermath was right on point!

Cannot wait to read the second installment! Especially considering Derreck’s hard limits 🤤

Lesetiger's Review:

M.C Roth is a new author for me that I will keep in mind. The first scene in this book is burned into my memory!

It was a different way to start a book and I thought it was really good!

There are a lot of kinks out there, so this book won't be for everyone. For me it was perfect, the story was a bit dark at times - humiliation and pain play are a theme. However, Trick and Nav's story captivated me and never let go.

The intensity of Trick and Nav's D/s relationship was excellently worked out and also what happens when someone crosses a line. That was incredibly well done.

I read through the book in one go - it was rivetingly written.

And now I sit and eagerly await Derreck's story.

Janet's Review:

Kinked Up was seriously good, dark and gritty. Some serious triggers, so be warned.

The initial alley encounter between Trick and Nav was seriously fantastic, explosive, serious chemistry!

The story was an emotional roller coaster ride for me. No sweets/fluff for us, all heat, hot and steamy, spicy.

Trick is a Dom; he has a relationship with a sub/fiancée. Nav doesn’t believe anyone would want him. He’s learned to close off his emotions. He’s always lacked the true D/s relationship.

Overall, this was seriously fantastic!! I literally couldn’t stop reading it. Well written with great pacing that hooked me!

Lori C's Review:

Kinked Up is the story of Nav and Trick. Nav is a serial dater, to be polite, who really wants nothing to do with love. Trick is the complete opposite. He’s is engaged to the love of his life and his sub. Or is he? Nav and Trick meet again when an elaborate scene that Trick and Theo have planned for months goes awry and instead of being with Theo, Trick scenes with Nav. Only Nav doesn’t know it’s a scene, he thinks it’s the hottest $ex of his life and then he realizes that he’s with his very hot and engaged neighbor.

The rest of this story is for you to consume and consume you will. It was at times hard to read and at other so gripping that I couldn’t turn away. There were points where I wasn’t sure a happy ending could be found and yet the author really found a way to pull this story together. This is my first M.C. Roth book and I’m quite enthusiastic to read the next book in this series. I’ve already added some of her backlist to my Amazon tbr list. 😊 I just love discovering new authors!

Nicole's Review:

That was the hottest first scene I’ve ever read. I think I am against the general population here in that I don’t feel like the cheating stayed accidental. The scene, and emotional cheating were beyond what I enjoy reading. There is a lot of angst on both sides, but after they get together it’s sweet how Nav finally accepts his feelings. I really enjoyed the smexy scenes and the D/S aspect of their relationship, but this was definitely not my favorite book this year.

Cheating is usually a hard limit for me, and I wouldn't have picked up the book if I had seen that in the trigger warnings, however because the team was reading the book, I took a chance and finished it.

Heather's Review:

M.C. Roth's books have always had an element of D/s, even the ones that were clearly more mainstream, but Kinked Up just lets the whole floodgate open and investigates BDSM in a whole new way for this author... and I'm there for it!

Kinked Up was gritty, sometimes difficult to read, but always engaging and I lost sleep because I just couldn't put it down... please note the TW and also the fact that there's an element of cheating that some people can't get past, but if you're willing to take on the kink, the CNC and the cheating you'll find yourself immersed in Nav and Trick's world and waiting with bated breath for Derrick's story...

Autumn's Review:

This was one of the books I hadn't been sure about. Cheating in any form is a hard limit for me. The first time i tried this one, i only made it through maybe the first 3 chapters and gave up. I didn't think this book would be for me.

But, after first reading book 6, then book 2, I thought i'd give this one another try. First off, reading this books in order is better, so don't do what I did. Although each book can be read as a standalone in a way, it's better to read in order since the next book does pick up right where this one left off with a different set of characters.
