Today we feature author Odessa Hywell in our Author Hotseat - let's dive right in and see what we can discover about her!
Tell us about your first… published M/M fiction/romance
Oh man! Bennett and Cooper. They were a wild ride.
Twisted Together, my first published m/m romance, features a sexual relationship between twin brothers of dubious (as well as some non-) consent, and light bondage with a guaranteed HEA. It also includes a size difference, sweet cuddles, and plenty of fluff to keep you afloat in these dark times.
and then your most recent one…
Technically, Morally Ambiguous, a duet featuring a loving father, his needy son with a praise kink public sex, and a happy ever after. if you mean published in the sense of already out in the world, ready to be consumed, but . . . my most recent book, just finished writing it and handed it off to my editor, is— Always Oskar, my fourth novel set to be published early 2022, features a loving grandfather who isn't above getting his hands dirty, a spoiled [of legal age] grandson who dares you to fuck around and find out, lace panties, lots of late night cuddles, wandering hands, slow kisses, and a pair of goats with ridiculous names. Also features an age gap [duh], a size difference and a virgin MC.
These two are way too cute for their own good. I made myself swoon a few times.
Do you write full time or part-time?
When I’m not tending to my son, animals or garden, I write full time—about four thousand words a day! In January that will change, if all goes according to plan, as I’ll be attending college for the first time at thirty-years-old with plans to get a Masters Degree in Social Work.
Something people would be surprised to know about you?
Random Fact: I have Dermatophagia which means I am nearly constantly picking or biting at my skin—mainly my fingers. It’s painful and bloody [for a hot second, at least] but it’s a lot harder to control than people assume. It’s not a “just stop doing it” type of thing. Most of the time I’m not even aware of what I’m doing until I’m bleeding.
Another Random Fact: If you bite your nails or chew the skin around them, you may have Dermatophagia too. It’s most common descriptive term is “wolf-biter.”
Don’t Google the pictures unless you’ve got a strong stomach.
Which character still pops into your mind to visit from time to time?
Bennett and Cooper from Twisted Together visit way more often than I feel I should admit too. The pair of them were just so hot together. On the bright side, because of their frequent social calls I have some bonus content for them which I post on my SubscribeStar.Adult account.
Where do you write? Do you have a routine?
I have an office with the most cluttered desk in the world. No one understands how I manage to work with so many things to touch but I manage just fine since my routine is fairly simple and productive.I wake up at 6:20 AM to take my son to school.
At 7:30 AM I make coffee and settle at my desk.
Until 8:30 AM I answer emails and screw around on social media.
From 8:30 AM until 2:00 PM I write or edit.
I pick my son up from school at 3:15 PM [Those lines are a nightmare, man.]
Once home, I take care of my daily household tasks before either writing, reading. playing a video game or gardening, depending on my mood, until bedtime.
What are your writing goals for the next year? The future?
In 2022 I plan to release my series Sinful Delights which is three books—as of right now—and follows the story of three couples with interconnected stories. From there, I hope to work on some of the stories I’ve neglected but . . . I write whatever character is demanding my attention and who can say who that will be in the future.
What’s the hardest part about writing M/M romance or erotica?
The hardest part about writing m/m romance is finding a balance between what readers want to read and what I, as an author, want to write but I think that’s true for writing in general.
Who’s your biggest supporter/cheerleader?
My mother. She isn’t allowed to read my books. I won’t even let her in my Facebook Reader Group but she’s always so excited and encouraging when I tell her I’m working on something new or just published another book. Then, after her, I would say my best friend for the past ten years. We’re both writers so 90% of our conversations are hyping each other up.
What do your friends and family think of what you write; do they know?
Most everyone in my life knows I write, and most of them such as my friends, family or my husband’s grandmother—bless her soul—are supportive of the content I publish under my second pen name. Though, since I live in the Southern USA I’ve been told by plenty of my in-laws I’m going to Hell for the content of my stories. My general response to that is some form of, “Okay. I’ll see most of you there—especially you since you’re banging a married man like a screen door in a tornado—so should I bring banana bread or a main entry? Meatballs?” At that point my husband usually takes me home.
In short, very few people know I write as Odessa Hywell.
Can you imagine my 87 year old grandmother-in-law reading stories featuring incestious relationships? Me either. But she is pretty chill so . . . maybe.
What is your favorite thing about writing M/M romance?
The community—hands down. I’ve made so many new friends within the writing community whether they are authors themselves or readers who enjoy my work. I love how supportive most of my fellow authors are and really appreciate the enthusiasm of our reader base.
How can we connect with you?
I’m bad at most forms of social media but I do try.
You can find me most often on Facebook—’cause I’m old—or in my NSFW discord. You can also join me on my SubscribeStar.Adult account for early access to the rough [very rough] draft of all my stories. I share covers, blurbs, short stories, exclusive sneak peeks at WIPs and weekly chapters.
If you’d like to be a little more removed but still get tons of NSFW content, I recommend my newsletter. I send a newsletter at least once a month and usually post sneak peeks of whatever I’m working on. Plus, there are some naughty gifs.
