Variable Onset (A Wild Type Novel) by Layla Reyne

A serial killer and a copycat, and two FBI agents pretending to be married while both highly aware of the attraction they first felt eight years ago. Can Carter and Lincoln find two killers while exploring the possibility of a real relationship?

From the blurb:

Special Agent Lincoln Monroe never breaks rules. Especially the one that says Carter Warren, his former student turned cocky field agent, is off-limits.

Except they’re undercover as newlyweds in a quirky small town where everyone is watching, everyone is talking, and their fake marriage is supposed to look real. It’s not supposed to feel real.

For Carter, it’s everything he never stopped wanting and nothing he can survive with his self-control intact. Years of longing explode the moment he’s sharing a house, a cover, and a bed with Lincoln. The restraint, the tension, the way Lincoln looks at him when he thinks no one is watching. None of it feels fake.

For Lincoln, it’s worse. Carter is temptation, disruption, and the one thing that could tilt his carefully ordered world off axis. Keeping up appearances means staying close. Closer than safe. Closer than professional. Closer than either of them can pretend is nothing.

And in a town full of nosy neighbors, fluffy biscuits, and buried secrets, pretending is getting harder by the day.

Variable Onset is the first book in the Wild Type series, following Lincoln and Carter as they navigate danger, desire, and the cases that keep pulling them together. This second edition features a fresh cover, updated formatting, and light edits.

SNik's review:

First in series (A Wild Type Novel). Coworkers. Age gap. Single dad. Very slow burn/low burn. Dual POV.

Sent from the FBI lecture hall to be undercover in a small college town, Lincoln is surprised to find his new partner is one of his star students from years ago. They may only be pretending to be husbands, but Carter will take advantage of being close to his crush from long ago even as they are on the clock chasing a serial killer.

Even though Carter and Lincoln are on the trail of a serial killer, this story has a small town vibe with interesting secondary characters and a danger-filled storyline with a ticking clock element. I enjoyed the times where Carter and Lincoln are on page together, the attraction and chemistry undeniable, and the UST was long but understandable given they are in a work scenario. The ending was wrapped up much too quickly, but as this is a re-release that appears will be an ongoing series I can forgive that in anticipation of more for the main couple. Overall, a really entertaining story with two characters that I would definitely read more of.
