Within the Winter Garden (Spire Trilogy Book 2) by Lewis Roberts

A wonderful continuation to this mysterious series full of murder, magic, and mayhem.

From the blurb:

At Summit State University, the truth is more dangerous than the lies.

The bell tower has loomed over campus for generations, but on one fateful night, it became the scene of a deadly confrontation. Dr. Richard Bellamy, a professor with secrets too dark to remain hidden, is dead. And now, Ethan Hernandez’s boyfriend, Jason, has vanished—taken by powerful forces that see him as something more than human.

Reeling from Jason’s disappearance and the raw, untapped power surging within him, Ethan is desperate for answers. But the deeper he digs, the more terrifying the truth becomes.

Meanwhile, a shocking murder sets off a chain of events that could shake the very foundations of Summit State University. The campus isn’t just a school—it’s a battleground. Beneath its halls lies a history of experiments, disappearances, and a chilling prophecy tied to Ethan’s own abilities. With the help of sharp-witted reporter Asako Kato, Ethan must race against time to unravel the mystery of the Five Anchors, outmaneuver those who seek to control him, and rescue Jason before he’s lost forever.

But some secrets were never meant to be unearthed. And as the snow falls heavier over Summit State University, Ethan begins to wonder—what if Jason wasn’t just taken? What if he was meant to disappear?

Angel's review:

(((This can NOT be read as a stand-alone, you have to read the first book in order to read this one. There's an overarching plotline that runs through these books which is why you have to read them in order.))

When I read Atop the Bell Tower, (the first book in this series), I enjoyed it so much! I was captivated by the characters and I found the storyline so intriguing, I was so excited to read it. And when it left off on a cliffhanger I knew I had to read the next book as soon as it came out, which is exactly what I did!

Now I will say it took me a few chapters to get fully immersed back into this world with these characters but once I did, I fully enjoyed it. Jason, Ethan, and Asako's stories continue in this intense continuation, we get information about why this is all happening on campus, along with the history behind people having the attunements. We also find more about why all of this is coming to the surface now and why Ethan isn't like the others who have attunements.

I will say that if you're expecting a romance heavy plot that is not what you're going to get here. This is more focused on Ethan and Jason becoming one with their powers and discovering what and who is behind all of the tragedy that's been happening on campus.

I loved learning all the new information that came to light in this story, the twists and turns were so well done! The writing was superb and extremely detailed, I loved getting to know more of the intricate backstory of this world and how these characters came to be. I really enjoyed this story and I am so excited to see this continue and to learn more about what is going to happen next.
