A rule following referee and an egotistical carefree hockey player are not supposed to hook up. But that surprising night and an unexpected turn in Nico's health has August taking all kinds of risks to be near Nico. Can their fake relationship turn into something neither was expecting in The Head Game?
From the blurb:
Fisher Cats Defenseman Rushed to Hospital After In-Game Fall—Mystery Beau Revealed?
Nico Arents is conscious and in stable condition following a seizure that occurred during the recent game against Buffalo.
Updates indicate that while still hospitalized, he’s hopeful for a quick return to the ice.
The incident raises serious questions after referee August Manning was spotted in the same hospital shortly after Arents was admitted.
Recent rumors have swirled around Arents’ involvement with someone within the league. Could Manning be the mystery man?
A credible source claims the two are engaged. “He has been so doting! He’s barely left Nico’s side.”
Tongues are wagging as their off-ice involvement throws Manning’s on-ice impartiality into question.
How will the league react? Thus far, they have declined to comment but given the new Code of Conduct, there will be some tough questions to answer for these men to keep their romance and their careers.
TRIGGER WARNING: Contains non-graphic scenes involving brain surgery and discussions about brain tumors and cancer. HEA guaranteed but please reach out if you have further questions.
Lesetiger's review:
I loved the first book in this series and I also loved “The Head Game”.
The writing style was wonderful and once immersed in the story, I found it hard to put the book down because the story was entertaining and captivating.
When August and Nico meet, things heat up. August is a referee, Nico is a defender for the Fisher Cats. And when Nico suffers a seizure on the ice during a game and has to go to hospital, August is determined to find out how he is doing. And to find out, August out of necessity fibs to achieve his goal. And I found it wonderful how the misadventure takes its course and gave me humorous scenes in the audiobook.
However, the book didn't just have light moments, there were also serious topics and it became very emotional. August is a character you enjoy having by your side. He was very supportive of Nico during a difficult time and I thought it was great how he looked after Nico. But the price for August was high. Nico is also a very likeable character who has his heart in the right place.
It was great how the relationship developed, but at some point they are both at the point where they have to ask themselves if it's worth everything they have to give up for it.
Some parts were very emotional and that's exactly what I love about books. The story had great secondary characters - Skylar, who is awesome, but Nico's family are awesome too.
A big plus in this book is the communication between them when things get tough.
I listened to the audiobook, which was narrated by James Edward Jones. He conveyed the emotions well and gave the characters a fitting voice. I was able to tell the protagonists apart very well. Overall, the audiobook was very entertaining and I'm already looking forward to the next volume in the series!
