The Last Guy On Earth is the 3rd book in Sarina Bowen's Hockey Guys series and it's always a good day when we get more MM from this author! Bonus when it's hockey!
From the blurb:
One cold December day, two men are blindsided by a hockey trade; one is the most decorated goalie in the league, while the other one is the youngest coach in the majors.
Jethro Hale is the last player Coach Clay Powers wants to see on his roster, but the G.M. pulls a fast one. And it's not like he can even explain why. Nobody knows about their love affair fifteen years ago.
Cue the all-star awkwardness, the painful memories and the reawakening of deep feelings on both sides.
Unfortunately, their attraction still burns brightly. But it can never be. A player and a coach? The scandal would overshadow the team’s banner year.
If only they could resist each other…
If you love grumpy heroes, high stakes hockey, struggling single parents and smoldering kisses, grab your copy of The Last Guy On Earth.

I've never been disappointed in a Sarina Bowen hockey romance and that streak has continued to hold with her Hockey Guys series. (Though I don't think anyone could ever replace Jamie and Wes from Us as my favs.) The book starts out with Jethro, a 9 year veteran goalie of his current team, being sucker-punched by a trade. Understandably, he's upset at this news knowing he has to uproot his family and move them closer to his new team. What he doesn't know, is that this new team is coached by none other than the man whose heart he shattered 15 years ago when it all began.

I don't think I even need to tell you how dismayed Coach Powers, aka Clay, feels about this trade happening behind his back. In fact, I don't think anyone within 100 feet of him when he found out the news wouldn't know exactly how he felt having his ex-lover back in his stratosphere. I honestly felt bad for Clay. Here he is, top of his coaching game, hoping to bring home the cup and BAM! A blast from the past comes along with a whirlwind of emotions to deal with on top of his very stressful job. I also think the fact that Clay and Jethro never having had any actual closure on their past made everything that much harder.

I liked how the story would have chapters that showed us the past because most of the time those glimpses connected to something happening in the present. I took a long time to warm up to Jethro, mostly because of his behavior in the past. Clay I always liked. He's an anxious mess, but he's a good-hearted soul. He had his moments when he was a jerk, but he always made sure to apologize. The journey back to each other was paved with obstacles, the glaringly obvious one being the power imbalance between coach and player. Clay had to find it in his heart to forgive and Jethro had to look back into himself and see what he felt in his heart all along.
I hope this isn't the last book in the series. There was no sneak peek into a future couple like there has been before. I definitely wouldn't ever say no to more hockey romance from this author at any point in the future.
