Readjustment (Restitution Series: Book Two) by B.H. Lynn

Second in the series and while really good leaves more questions than answers. Caleb and Adam are almost at the breaking point of their relationship. Being partners and having a murder to solve doesn't help.

From the Readjustment blurb:

The greatest lies are the ones we tell ourselves.

Adam Dawson never thought he’d meet someone like Caleb Straus. Three months of friendship with his new partner has made Adam take a good look at his life, and he doesn't like what he sees. The safety he finds with Caleb is the only thing holding him together, but it's also the thing that might rip his world to shreds.

Caleb wasn’t ready for Adam either, and the bond they’ve formed has grown exponentially over time. It's intense and gratifying in a way he's craved for years, but also the biggest problem in his life.

To complicate things further, the body of the County Sheriff’s son, Keola Antu, shows up in a Peyton field.

As the they investigate who’s responsible, they discover the case offers more than they bargained for. For every answer there’s another question just behind it. Everyone has something to hide, and the deeper they dig, the closer to home it hits.

With their foundations shaken, the men face a crossroads that'll shape their chances at a life together. But when old habits rear their heads, will they both find the strength to make the hard choices? Or will the damage of their pasts that once brought them together, tear them apart?

Reed Kaye's review:

This is the second book in the series and it really helps if you read these in order.

Getting a new case is just the beginning of situations to handle for Caleb and Adam.

Adam is only at this police station for a given amount of time and even though they are working on a homicide the clock is ticking on Adam being Caleb’s partner. The mystery part of the story keeps moving along but there are more questions than answers about this.

On a personal level. This is an intense story. Adam has had a long time to get to this point in his marriage. He has a cheating husband yet finds himself in a situation that leaves him more confused and unbalanced. Calab is aware of his feelings for Adam but can’t handle the path their relationship is headed.

I have to say while I enjoyed this story it left me more anxious to get my hands on the next book. This is the reason I don’t do cliffhangers but I got hooked into this one because I really enjoy this author’s writing.

Angel's review:

When I read Restitution I loved it, I loved the characters, the twisting plotline, the murder and mystery, along with the world building itself. Since it left off on a bit of a cliffhanger I was excited for this one, but unfortunately this fell a bit short for me.

I'll start off by saying the writing surrounding the cases that both MC's are investigating and trying to solve is done really well. The way it's written makes you invested in figuring out who was behind the murder right alongside the MC's. That's something that was as fantastic and enjoyable as the first one....

What I didn't love was how much back and forth occured between Adam and Caleb, especially considering Adam was married. While he was in a manipulative and loveless marriage, he was still taking advantage of Caleb in the sense that he was making it seem like he was going to leave his husband for him but then never did. And that just kept repeating throughout the story. They would have conversations about putting up boundaries because of things being complicated and yet they would be right back into bed with each other and end up having the same issues, over and over. I understand that life is messy and complicated, but I feel as though the back and forth that Adam and Caleb kept having was overdone. It made me lose interest in reading because it got to the point where events just kept repeating themselves. However, having said that by the time I got to the end of the story I was once again reinvested in not only the main plotline but also in the characters. Adam eventually got to the point where he took the steps to actually change and work towards something better, and that was a HUGE moment for his character.

The writing itself, (outside of Caleb and Adam's relationship), was really great. I love reading books that have that mystery component and where you can solve cases right alongside the MC's. And the author did that really well.

Even though I didn't love this one completely I'm still interested in seeing where this series goes next. I am curious to know how deep crime and corruption runs in Caleb's hometown, along with seeing if Caleb and Adam can find their happy ever after.
