Welcome one and all to the TALES FROM THE TAROT multi-author universe! Each story follows a different card. To kick it off we have Jennifer Codys Where Fools Have Tread, a low angst comedy.
From the blurb:
Dec:
I’ve never really had much in the way of direction in my life, until I walk into an eerie shop where a strange man charges me more than I should pay for a tarot reading of one card. Next thing I know, I’m graduating school to be a domestic servant and find myself employed by someone else’s weird uncle in the strangest mansion. Everyone is great even if they’re all a little... off. Except Thoren. He’s a thorn in my side, and I’m not sure how I feel about him dropping his cards all the time just to make me pick them up for him. (My ass is not what he’s looking at because... what?)
Thoren:
I’ve known since I was a child the path I would take in life. I’m a guardian, one of the Trustworthy, and I am excellent at my job. I take my pleasure wherever I can find it, because I’ve earned every second of my leisure with the hours, days, and weeks of work I put in on every mission. Finding pleasure in teasing the new butler is new, but Dec seems to like it just as much as I do, no matter how often he tries to hide in the cleaning closet. (I’m definitely looking at dat ass because... yum.)
Where Fools Have Tread is an MM paranormal romance set in the Murder Sprees and Mute Decrees universe with a human butler who finds his calling serving a household full of paranormal protectors and a gargoyle with resting bitch face who takes delight in teasing him.
Where Fools Have Tread is a standalone MM romance novel as part of the multi-author collaboration Tales from the Tarot. This book is based on the major arcana card The Fool.
Molly Otto's review:
Another excellent chaos inducing read from Jennifer Cody. We have Dec, whose life has been stagnant since his uncles passing ends up in the Magic Shop that will change the course of his life forever. Thoren, along with his nestmates guard Earth from outside influences, what he doesn't expect is the new butler to change it all. From their first interaction, the desire is undeniable, yet they take their time in letting it happen. And let me tell you once those guards are down, oh boy, you are in for some fun.
This is book one of the TALES FROM THE TAROT multi-author universe. Jennifer did a brillant job in both combining the meaning of the Fools card along with the power of a tarot reading into this story. Mix in a cameo from her MURDER SPREES AND MUTE DECREES series, and you are in for a treat. She keeps up with her chaos theory style of writing along with the joys of paired souls. If the rest of the series lives up to this book, we are in for a great journey.
Angel's review:
Jennifer Cody is a new-to-me author, I'm not familiar with their work, so this book was my first time reading a story of theirs. I am definitely a fan of their writing style now, I enjoyed how they described and built the background scenery, as well as the attention to details with the Tarot Cards. I loved that those played such a monumental role throughout this story, and they weren't just mentioned once and then forgotten about, they played a critical role the whole time. I don't think an inanimate object has ever been as much of a focal point as a side character before, but that's what happened with the cheeky Tarot Cards.
What I loved the most was how Jennifer didn't just create two MC's and lackluster side characters. She created backgrounds for each and every character, each person provided an extra element to the story, and she not only had depictions of what all the gargoyle brothers looked like in their human forms, but she also had detailed depictions of what they looked like in their stone form as well. I thought that was a really nice touch, and showed her creativity, as well as her dedication to providing a well rounded story full of characters who all play a part.
The relationship between Dec and Thoren was definitely a slow-burner. They kind of gave off an enemies to lovers vibe during certain parts of the story. Once they both stopped fighting how they felt they realized that they have actually liked each other for quite some time. I liked how their relationship wasn't insta-love or insta-lust, I'm glad Jennifer took the time to let her characters grow and breathe a bit before they jumped into bed together.
Overall, I thought this was a terrific way to start off a new series! I also learned new things about Tarot Cards that I did not know prior to reading this, which I found to be really cool!
