The Misfit Mage and His Dashing Devil: Diabolic Romance Book One by MN Bennet

An inept mage and a powerful demon become unlikely allies. Bez has no love for mages, and being bound accidentally to Wally is unbearable, but he can't kill him, yet. Once they survive the immediate danger and wait out the bond, Bez can be free, but is that really what he wanted after all? The Misfit Mage and His Dashing Devil is the first book in a new series from MN Bennet.

From the blurb:

Apprentice mage Wally spends his days cataloging rare artifacts and dreaming about finally mastering
his magics and living the adventures he’s always desired. Bez, a once mighty devil who craves the freedom of the outside world again, despises his confinement inside a powerful object. His only company now comes from the mages working within the archives he’s stored. Among them, the most annoying of them all, an anxious and considerate Walter.

When the archive is attacked, Wally and Bez each seize the opportunity to achieve their dreams—and inadvertently create a magical link between them. With so many lives lost in this assault on the mage headquarters, Wally’s connection to a dangerous devil makes him a threat and a target, forcing the pair on the run. Wally sees Bez as a sadistic devil, and Bez finds every word out of the mage’s mouth grating. Even so, they’ll have to work together to unravel the true threat in the city or they won’t live long enough to enjoy the lives they’ve both desperately wanted.

SNik's Review:

First in series (Diabolic Romance). Paranormal. Enemies to lovers. Slow burn. Dual POV. Heed content warnings.

Wally is a mage that can’t seem to control his magic, and has been relegated to the archives researching and cataloging to his heart's content while failing test after test to become more than an apprentice. Meanwhile, Bez has been imprisoned in the archive for 50 years as he is a dangerous and deadly diabolic, and Wally has no idea that his constant companion over the last few years has heard every single word Wally has said while talking to himself. After an unfortunate attack, Bez is finally free, but awkwardly bound to Wally, and agreeing to try to help Wally find the truth behind the attack is not really in his best interests.

There is plenty of interesting world building and immediate action to this entertaining story, but it took me a while to warm up to Bez and Wally. However, the second part of The Misfit Mage and His Dashing Devil has some surprising reveals and more insight to Bez and Wally’s growing connection, which increased the fun.

Once they are working together and closer to uncovering the truth, it becomes clear that Bez and Wally may just have something worth keeping. Looking forward to more from this series.
