One Wicked Night (Love & Magic Book 3) by Colette Rivera

"I'm here for you"........."I've never had a partner who was." One Wicked Night.

From the blurb:

After one unforgettable night they were never supposed to see each other again.

Tristan Taylor Tomás finally has the career opportunity he’s been waiting for but it means moving across the country and leaving everything behind. A year’s worth of flirting with a hot mysterious man over coffee orders has come to nothing.

Unless…

Powerful Witch, Edwin Bickel follows the rules. Especially the ones he sets for himself. His life is carefully constructed, change unwelcome, until sweet Mortal Tristan tempts the misanthropic Witch into abandoning his moratorium on love.

But Edwin’s past casts a long shadow and he won’t risk getting close to Tristan… so one night is all they have.

When a chance re-encounter has magic of its own, Edwin can’t bring himself to walk away any more than he can allow himself to open up. A casual affair seems like the perfect answer, however Edwin isn’t the only Witchy influence in Tristan’s new life.

Tristan doesn’t know magic exists and something sinister is lurking out of sight.

Can Edwin trust Tristan to help stop the biggest magical crime New York has ever seen? And can a Mortal looking for love ever make it work with a Witch who’s spent his life guarding his heart?

One Wicked Night is a sweet and steamy gay paranormal romance. Tropes include: grumpy/sunshine, one night stand, opposites attract, and Witch/Mortal. HEA guaranteed! It is book three in the Love & Magic series but can be read as a stand alone if you don't mind spoilers for previous books. If you intend to read all books in the series they are best enjoyed in order. This book is intended for adult audiences, CWs can be found on the author's website.

Miki J's Review:

I've not read the previous two books in series... and I don't think that I was missing out on anything because the author gave enough background/world setting details to enjoy this book… but I’ll just say the other characters from the previous novels are in this book as well.

Anyhoo, I enjoyed this story... Tristan is a sweet guy and has been fantasizing about Edwin for quite some time. They finally get that one night... and it’s all he’s dreamed about… and then it wasn’t.

Edwin is a bit of a stickler for the rules, but then he eventually realizes there’s more to life… this feeling / idea does take a bit for him to understand, though. Actually, his emotional back'n'forth was getting a tad annoying for me (and especially for Tristan!!)... but they do work things out.

They also have a bit of a mystery to solve, which is a good sub-plot.

Overall, I enjoyed this novel very much.

Jacqueleen the Reading Queen's Review:

This is my first read by author Collette Rivera and it was super cute. I love a grumpy/sunshine pairing, and Edwin and Tristin ticked that box for me. I loved how Edwin spoke with his old world charm. He was so adorable with his attempt at keeping things casual between them, while also being incredibly sweet at times. After finding out about his past, I totally understood his need to protect himself. Edwin had been through a trauma and there was no right way for one to respond to that. Sometimes that means putting walls around yourself and heart and after having them up for so long it can be difficult to take them back down.

I enjoyed seeing Edwin slowly open up to Tristan. Tristan was such a likeable character. He was truly a kind soul. It made me sad that his self esteem wasn't the greatest, but that could be chalked up to his own childhood trauma, unfortunately. Both Tristan and Edwin's pasts led to a lot of miscommunication between them, but they both bit the bullet and opened up, eventually. I think having everything out on the table helped them immensely with their growing relationship.

All the magic was a fun aspect of the book. The magical case Edwin was investigating was interesting, too. I'm happy to see the next book is going to be about Luca. That poor witch. I felt secondhand embarrassment for him in his small portion of this read and already was hoping he'd get his own HEA. I'm looking forward to reading Witch Boyfriend Wanted when it comes out in Feb 2024.
