Soulmates (Soulmates Book 1) by Kate Munro

Soulmates is a debut novel by Kate Munro which features a college full of magical students, lots of secrets, and a friends to lovers romance that seems like it was inevitable all along.

From the blurb:

Maddox St. James and Jake Osterman have it all—a perfect friendship, powerful magic, and the future laid at their feet. The only thing that could make life any better is finally gaining the courage to admit that they are desperately in love with one another.

But this declaration carries the potential to ruin everything, and before they have the chance to explore their feelings, a spell gone drastically wrong nearly destroys them both.

Now, Maddox is fighting for his life, and Jake is fighting for his sanity as an unknown magic challenges everything they thought they knew about their world.

A race across the country, a quirky, reclusive mage, and a new kind of magic may be their only hope of survival and a chance at lasting love.

Soulmates is an urban fantasy friends-to-lovers romance featuring clueless best friends, a magic ritual, a swamp, and a connection that runs soul-deep.

First off, I have to say that I love the cover. I'm not someone who chooses reads based on covers (I'm a blurb girl), but I can definitely appreciate the artwork involved in this one. The book itself was an interesting debut. It starts right off with Maddox and Jake embroiled in an elaborate magical challenge put on by their high society college at first appearances. Turns out that the ones in charge of the challenges may not be exactly who everyone believes, which leads us to much of the intrigue going on in this book.

I liked both Jake and Maddox. Their bond and love for each other was definitely a highlight. They may have been young, but they'd already spent the majority of their lives in love with one another. It wasn't hard to believe these two could be the real deal despite their young ages. I also really liked Cricket. He was such an interesting character, even though he sometimes spoke in hints rather than being forthright. I have a feeling he and a certain college dean may have a past, and I'm looking forward to see if I'm right in the next book.

Speaking of the next book, it seems Soulmates is going to be a series with a continuing plotline. I have so many questions, along with a few hypotheses. The sneak peek of book 2 at the end of this one definitely had some alarm bells blaring. The author chose well with their prologue if they wanted to hook the reader for what is stored next for this couple and their friends.

Miki J's Review:

This book started a bit chaotically... but I soon was devouring the story. The world building and background is unique and this book, while focused on both MC's, does quite a bit to explain the other characters and their roles... sets it up nicely for continuing suspense/storyline in book 2 (don't worry, this does end on HFN!!).

Now, the MC's - the classic trope of friends who've been in love with each other for years but are too scared to say something about it... which backfires spectacularly on them!! They may be soulmates ....but that doesn't guarantee smooth sailing!!

Truly an entertaining story with magic, adventure, mystery, found family/friends and, of course, love.

Really can't wait for next in series!!
