His Death Bringer - An MM Assassin Dark Romance (The District Book 1) by Courtney W. Dixon

Even though this wasn’t dark enough for me, I would strongly recommend to play attention to the trigger warnings for His Death Bringer.

From the blurb:

He calls me his dark angel, but I’m merely a killer. A bringer of death.

Luca Davenport

He is my angel, sent to be my death bringer to save me from my tormentors and betrayers—those who

sold me into slavery when I was only eight years old. Angel came in with guns blazing and black wings that were made to crush his enemies and envelope me in love. He belongs to me and I belong to him. We are destined. After he saves me from my captors, we hunt down the remaining men who had abused me for eleven years to make them pay in blood.

Dante Varga

He is a broken boy of no more than nineteen. He sees me as an angel, but I’m simply a killer. An assassin for hire. I can’t save him. I can’t take care of him. There’s no room left in my dying soul to care about someone. Not anymore. But I can’t turn him away either. I should kill him. He’s a witness. But I feel compelled to protect him at all costs. Saving him will either shatter the ice around my heart or destroy me. Either way, Luca is dangerous.

Each book in this series will be read as a standalone, however, reading in order will add more pleasure to the reading experience.

CW: graphic violence, murder, rape, explicit content

Tatted_book_freak's Review:

I can almost guarantee that I am in the minority here when I say I expected more from His Death Bringer. More darkness, more violence, more sketchy characters, more drama, just more. Please don’t take my evaluation the wrong way because I am in no way trying to discredit the author, especially since I have heard such praise for her work, but maybe our definition of darkness don’t align.

Luca’s character was very childlike, which is completely understandable considering the trauma he has endured. His rabbit stole the show for me, providing comfort and a strength for him to continue moving forward.  We were able to witness his progress throughout his journey to becoming a man, which was appreciated.  While also noticing his struggles and traumatizing effects of his captivity.

ʜᴇ ᴄᴀʟʟᴇᴅ ᴍᴇ ʜɪꜱ ᴅᴀʀᴋ ᴀɴɢᴇʟ, ʙᴜᴛ ʜᴇ ᴡᴀꜱ ᴍʏ ᴀɴɢᴇʟ ᴏꜰ ʟɪɢʜᴛ, ᴀɴᴅ ɪ ɴᴇᴠᴇʀ ᴡᴀɴᴛᴇᴅ ᴛᴏ ꜱᴇᴇ ʜɪᴍ ᴅɪᴍᴍᴇᴅ.

Dante was such a patient man, even though he didn’t see himself as such. Luca touched something deep inside him and never let go, bringing the best part of Dante to the forefront. His constant frustrations with his feelings towards Luca, his inability to stop at nothing to bring down his tormentors, alongside of Luca, just adds so much depth to the story.

“𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗼𝗻, 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲. 𝗜’𝗺 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄. 𝗬𝗼𝘂’𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝘁, 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵.”

Dante and Luca were technically doomed from the start, especially with their upbringings and past traumatic events. But, we slowly witnessed their bond grow stronger and stronger as the days went by, an understanding of which Luca needed. Dante’s tenderness shined through his killer instincts, easing Luca into how love was supposed to feel.

Oh Cleo!! She melted my heart with her instinctual love of Luca from the beginning.  Her protectiveness over him, even though she was trained to guard the perimeter, she sensed the importance of Luca and stayed by his side and struck when needed. I have always loved Cane Corso’s, mainly because they’re basically a larger pitbull, so to read the positive message portrayed about such a ferocious animal, just shows how great of animals they truly are!!
