Unfortunate, Unlucky 13 by Nicole Dykes

Unfortunate is a a great vacation vibe read for sitting on the beach and enjoying the romance.

From the blurb:

Welcome to the Black Diamond Resort and Spa . . .
I’m in exile in this luxurious refuge after a scandal, which shouldn’t be a scandal at all.
I’m Elijah Hunt, former child actor, now beloved action star.
When a picture of me in a compromising position is posted online, for the entire world to see, my agent sent me here to escape the limelight.
But here, it’s different from my crazy, loud, glitzy life. It’s quiet and peaceful. No one seems impressed with my celebrity.
And no one is less impressed than the sexy, aloof member of the cleaning crew. He couldn’t care less who I am or why I’m here.
He’s convinced I’m one of the fortunate ones—and I suppose I am. I’ve had it all—big houses, the best care, money, fame, and shallow adoration . . . but I’ve never been loved.
I’ve never known if people like me for who I am underneath it all or just for my money and fame.
And to me . . . that seems awfully unfortunate.

Tatted_book_freak's Review:

A complete 180 for Nicole after finishing Spark of Hope’s more severe and emotional series. The flirtatious banter between Atlas and Elijah was comical, even though there was a bit of hostility initially. And I loved how Atlas kept his cool about not knowing Elijah’s identity.

“I ɯαɳƚ ɾҽƈƙʅҽʂʂ. I ɯαɳƚ ყσυ ƚσ ʅҽƚ ʅσσʂҽ σɳ ɱყ Ⴆσԃყ αɳԃ ϝυƈƙ ɱҽ ʂσ ԋαɾԃ, I’ʅʅ ϝҽҽʅ ιƚ ϝσɾ ԃαყʂ.”

Oh, how I loved Atlas and Elijah’s chemistry! They were just what the other needed at such a critical moment in their lives.  A total swoon-worthy story that escalated quickly into something more than a fling.  Their drastic contrasts and growth throughout made this into a cute, quick read!

Jacqueleen the Reading Queen's Review:

"𝙎𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙨𝙤𝙤𝙣, 𝙄'𝙡𝙡 𝙜𝙤 𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙩𝙤 𝙢𝙮 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙗𝙚 𝙖 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙢𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙮.
𝙄'𝙢 𝙜𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙨."

Unfortunate features one of those couples that make you want to slap them upside the head. Honestly, I wanted to physically sit Elijah and Atlas down and force them to spit out their true feelings. So much uncertainty and angst could have been resolved if they were just honest with one another about how they were truly feeling. That being said, I get it. The odds were stacked against them. Elijah is a famous movie star on a forced vacation at an exclusive resort after being outed. Atlas is the help, as in their meet cute is when Atlas arrives to clean the villa Elijah is staying in. I can totally see each of these men feeling too vulnerable to express their feelings after such a short time together.

"𝙄 𝙬𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝 𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙨 𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙣 𝙪𝙥 𝙞𝙣 𝙖 𝙨𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙚, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙄 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙗𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙗𝙚𝙖𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙛𝙪𝙡 𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙞𝙨. 𝙃𝙚 𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙠𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙭𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙢. 𝙇𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙣 𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠, 𝙜𝙡𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨𝙡𝙮 𝙣𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙. 𝙈𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩."

I really enjoyed watching Atlas and Elijah fall in love. Even though they agreed to just hooking up, it doesn't take long for them to both see the potential for more. Hookups don't spend every non working moment together. They don't cuddle on the couch and watch TV. And they certainly don't count down the minutes until they can see one another again. I felt bad for Atlas when all his co workers made sure to warn him off Elijah. And I also felt vindication when Elijah proved all the naysayers wrong in the end. My tiny, secret vindicative side really wanted a scene where one particular coworker had to eat crow. Alas, we did not get such a scene, but we did get an amazing HEA, which in my book was even better!

Honorary mention must go to Bob the peeping tom monkey. I can't wait to see what other hijinx he gets up to in Holdens book, Exception by Cora Rose!

SNik's Review:

Part of a multi-author series (Unlucky 13), set at the Black Diamond Resort and Spa, but all are standalone stories. Dual POV.

Famous actor Elijah Hunt has come to the Black Diamond Resort and Spa to wait out a scandal, and his first meeting with housekeeping isn’t ideal, even though Atlas is a seriously attractive resort employee. Atlas loves his life on the tropical island, he does a job he can be proud of and has plenty of free time to enjoy the quiet pace of island life.

When Atlas and Elijah start up a casual fling, they know it can’t be anything more, Elijah has to return to the limelight and Atlas can’t imagine going back to a corporate life.

Both men are likable characters with just enough backstory to make the reader look forward to an HEA for them.

This story has high steam, and Atlas and Elijah have to decide how they see any type of future and whether they can manage that together.

Heather's Review:

I enjoyed escaping to the Black Diamond Resort and Spa with Elijah - the first time he's ever really had a chance to breathe and be himself and it was beautiful to watch him soak in his environment and the eye candy that is Atlas...

Both characters are likeable and relatable and Nicole Dykes does a great job of integrating their backstories into the book as we go along so we learn more and more about each man and how he's gotten to where he is and what he wants going forward...

Well paced and beautifully written, Unfortunate makes a great addition to your summer reading list - whether you pick it up for a beach vacation or a lazy, rainy day - you won't go wrong with adding Unfortunate to your TBR.
