Sworn Enemy, Wild Heart Ranch #1 - Kelly Fox

Sworn Enemy is the beginning of a brand new series from Kelly Fox. Forgiving the man who bullied Charlie for years may not be easy, but realizing that he may have feelings for the man Justin has become is entirely unexpected. Can something beautiful be built from so many ugly things in the past?

From the blurb:

Hating Justin Jennings should be a lot easier than this.

He nearly ruined my life, and I swore when I left town that I’d become the opposite of him in every possible way.

I’ve kept that promise, traveling the world to save the people who cannot save themselves. The lost, the trafficked, the stolen. This work is my life’s mission, and now my father has given me the land to expand my operations.

The caveat? It’s in the same small Texas town that I escaped all those years ago.

As much as I try, I’m unable to avoid him. Worse, all I see is a broken man putting himself back together bit by bit.

I want to hate him so much.

But he’s making it impossible.

The only thing easy about any of this is how quickly I’m falling for my sworn enemy.

SNik's Review:

First in series (Wild Heart Ranch). Ex-bully to lovers. Hurt/comfort. Found family. Dual POV.

Charlie is the go to guy if you want someone found or rescued, and now he has returned to his hometown to start up an equine therapy center on his family’s land, but he wasn’t ready to be running into his old high school bully every time he turns around.

Justin has a lifetime of regrets, bullying Charlie is just one thing from his horrible past, along with drugs, alcohol and a suicide attempt, Justin is trying to live a better life but he knows nothing will make up for the things he’s done in the past.

A story filled with redemption, forgiveness, caring support and understanding, Charlie and Justin begin a tentative relationship learning to trust each other and build something positive from their past experiences.

All the secondary cast of characters that provide advice and friendship really allow for Justin to accept his worth and when Charlie’s affection is given they both realize they can be strong together.

The honest communication and steamy interactions are swoony and I felt like these men worked hard to give their best to each other and fall into love. A new Kelly Fox series? - sign me up!

Heather's Review:

It was great getting to know more about Justin, who figured heavily in the Rebel Sky Ranchi series as a man with demons chasing him... and who hit rock bottom in the first part of his brother's book, The Sheriff's Troublemaker pt 1.  Charlie's backstory is intertwined with the Wrecked Guardians series, but I think while it would be good to start there, it's slightly less imperative than getting Justin's history. For this reason, despite being the start of a new series, I do recommend reading at least The Sherriff's Troublemaker pt 1 (Part of the Dirty Daddies Pride anthology) before starting Sworn Enemy.

I will also say that Sworn Enemy comes with some strong trigger warnings for past attempted suicide, past substance abuse, violence and some scenes dealing with human trafficking.    That being said, I think that Kelly Fox handles all of these difficult and emotional topics with grace and care, enhancing the story rather than stigmatizing or glorifying the trauma.

This book was truly a story of redemption and rebuilding for both characters, but especially Justin and I was totally on board for it!  Fox took the characters on a journey from high school bully and victim to enemies to lovers that was fast paced, steamy and sweet!  It was so captivating to read that I didn't want to put it down... I read it all in one go!
