Crossing the Line by AG Meiers

Crossing the Line is a fantastic second entry into the new series Jake's Bar by AG Meiers. Being a high powered attorney for a powerful family for years Brent Northwood is able to fix and manipulate almost anything, except his broken relationship with Holden Wright. But now there's a chance to help Holden, and Brent will do everything he can to fight for another chance with the man that stole his heart.

From the blurb:

Broken Trust doesn’t give Second Chances…

Holden Wright had it all—and lost it. Five months ago, he was on top: a decorated detective with a bright future. Then his father’s gambling destroyed everything. Left with nothing, Holden works nights at Jake’s Bar with no idea how to get his broken life back on track.

Brent Northwood has it all—except the man he loves. Brent made a deal with the devil to become a well-respected lawyer, but success doesn’t turn out to be all he ever wanted. His love for Holden started with a wild, crazy hookup in the rain, but it all came to an abrupt end when Brent lied—with best intention—but a lie is a lie and Holden can’t forgive.

Holden needs the successful lawyer back in his life about as badly as he needs the bullet hole his father put in his shoulder. But with secrets from Holden’s past threatening his future, Brent is the only one who can protect him. The two men forge a volatile truce to stay one step ahead of danger, but is it enough to mend the broken trust between them? Can they risk a second chance for love knowing what’s at stake?

But none of that matters if they can’t find out who is trying to take Holden down…

SNik's Review:

Second in series (Jake’s Bar), must be read in order. Second chance. Hurt/comfort. Found family.

Brent is an attorney that can fix anything, but unfortunately lying comes second nature to him and it broke the only relationship he cared about and he can’t fix his broken heart. When Brent discovers he can help former police detective Holden with finding some important hidden information, Brent hopes that showing Holden how much he still cares will get him another chance at love.

Crossing the Line was a well done second chance trope, with all the yearning and pining and sweet descriptions of Brent and Holden still having feelings for each other. It had a slow build of them spending time together as Holden learned to trust Brent again. Meiers provided background on both Brent and Holden so we could see how their pasts have affected their decisions and personalities and difficulties navigating a close relationship.

All the secondary cast of characters were wonderful and the series backdrop set at Jake’s Bar is a fun and supportive family of individuals willing to go the extra mile for their friends. Some danger, some steam, some romance made this a great read, and I enjoyed the book even more than the first from the series.
