Arc Review: Mighty Quill by Emmaline Strange

Mighty Quill is an unusual shifter story with fantastic world-building. Roommates to idiots to lovers, bi awakening, paranormal shifter romance. Lots of steam, fluff & magic goodness.

From the blurb:

Cassian Rhodes is just a normal guy going through normal college stuff:

Weird roommate? Check.

Hockey Shenanigans? Check.

Sexuality Crisis? Uh…

Falling for your roommate? Hold on…

Finding out your new BF’s family is magic? Wait, WTF!?

Mighty Quill is a roommates to idiots to lovers, bi awakening, paranormal shifter romance. Lots of steam, fluff & magic goodness.

Author's note: Quill is a mystery and it does contain some mentions of gore, body horror, & assault

Jacquie's Review:

I don't know quite where to start since I basically spent the last day reading this book and still feel like I'm in there. It's chonky! Though the last 10% is promo for other books so that makes it a little less intimidating.

Cassian and Thor were just perfect! They communicated they dated, and they had a solid friendship behind them. There were so many lovely moments between them that their romance felt like a natural progression. Even with a mating bond, it was made clear to Cassian that he had to be 100% sure before they committed to anything.

The sexuality crisis was so cute and well done. There wasn't a big unnecessary freak-out, more of a scientific exploration and honestly, it was pretty funny.

The cover does give a little too much away, so Thor isn't really much of a surprise but it was so well done that I didn't mind it.

I'm rating this at 4.5 because there are a few absolutely minor issues with the writing - transitions that were a little hasty or abrupt or the wrong words used. To me, it felt like there either had to be some trimming or extend it to 2 books, there's enough material there for it. The ending was a tad short for me but my overall enjoyment of the book gives it a high rating because I really was hooked throughout and the book will stay with me for a while.

For an unusual shifter story that does occasionally get a bit icky, Mighty Quill is perfect.

Sheena's Review:

4-4.5 stars

I am quite picky sometimes about shifter romances, and will often err on the side of not taking a chance with it. However with Mighty Quill, I'm so glad I did. The blurb had me right away - room-mates to idiots to lovers 😂

I also love it when tropes are turned on their heads, and this was so good at doing that. I loved both Cassian and Thor (and the reaction from everyone to Thor's name when they first heard it 😂, nice running joke). I won't repeat the blurb but straight off I was intrigued by the premise of a shifter who can't shift, and has never managed to find his animal form. I liked the way shifters were done in this universe, how they could be any animal at all, I don't think I've come across that in any other book, so this felt fresh and interesting.

I loved the slow burn of the romance, and how Cassian took his time to discover himself and his sexuality before leaping into something, this is also something that doesn't happen enough and I loved that they took their time before diving headlong into the relationship. Once they did though, heat galore 🔥🔥🔥🔥, my goodness. I loved that the alpha thing was turned on its' head and that also felt different and I loved it.

The story is good too, plenty of twists and turns and and a truly twisted bad guy (and I'm glad Benson got his comeuppance too).

I'm so happy I took a chance with Mighty Quill, it was a real page turner and so addictive, I needed to get back to Cas and Thor so I could find out what was going to happen next.
