As a blogger, I am often privileged to get Advance Reader Copies of books I want to read and AE Lister has been great about sharing their new releases with me to blog about, but while I have an ARC copy of Various Distractions waiting to devour this weekend, I have loved everything of theirs I read this year and decided to purchase my own copy of Various Persuasions to support the author and also catch up on this series before I dive into the ARC. I was not disappointed in my purchase...
From the Blurb:
A non-binary Dom. An eager young sub. Service, orgasm control, bondage. An initial encounter leads to a synchronous exploration of identity and intimacy.
Nic Walker is not your typical Dom—physically female but identifying as male. And Vincent Blake is not your typical twenty-four-year-old straight guy—seductively submissive with a penchant for lacy underwear.
When Nic’s Dominatrix friend Daphne encourages them to get together, she can only hope they recognize the compatibility of their desires and personalities.
Nic has been holing up alone in their townhouse for too long, getting over a bad ‘relationship’, and it’s time for them to start living again. When Nic meets Vincent, neither expects the tentative relationship to take off like a runaway train. But each layer of the attractive and seemingly vulnerable young man Nic exposes ignites their own desires and leads both on a path to revealing the most interesting parts of themselves.
Who knew piano practice could be a form of sexual service? Or that a pair of overpriced panties could inspire such devotion?
Through bondage, service, objectification and the purchase of large quantities of lacy unmentionables, as well as a few specific sex toys and devices, Nic explores how far Vincent will go to please them and how much of themself they will risk to have him.
Heather's Review:
As a self-confessed lover of everything AE Lister writes, you won't be surprised by the fact that once again I love Various Persuasions. Before we even get to the characters, let's talk pacing - perfect... the fact that it's set in Ottawa, Canada and I recognize the stores and settings as a Canadian (if you're not, don't worry, you'll still get it... but I love when books are set places I know) and the way that AE Lister takes Safe Sane and Consensual to heart when writing every aspect of BDSM and kink that are written into the book (even when it's to shine a negative light on something)
AE Lister understands how to write great kink, great steam and great scenes... but they also know how to write characters who will stay with you - and Nic and Vincent are two of those amazing characters... Even though you know going in that Nic is non-binary and Vince has a penchant for lacy undergarments, you will still discover layers and hidden depth that brings these characters to life an amazing way.
Even the side characters have so much personality and AE Lister is able to show just how small a world the kink community can be without saying anything at all...
Whether this is your first introduction to AE Lister, or like me, you are already a fan, I highly recommend you check out Various Persuasions ASAP, the sequel Various Distractions (which has a fantastic Extended Excerpt from last week's Teaser Tuesday) comes out on December 28th and you'll definitely want to read this book first so that you start off knowing all the back story you'll need to really sink your teeth into Various Distractions!
